Valley of Plenty

Scope

The motivation behind building Valley of Plenty

I want a campaign where the players not only are based in a single place, but also revisit dungeons and see how these have changed.

The goal of the project

Players should get to experience a settlement that grows and changes over time, where they get to grow stronger and explore more and more of the mysterious valley.

Valley of Plenty's Unique Selling point

Rather than visiting each dungeon once, the larger areas will be further explored over time, as both large enemies and terrain obstacles will initially hinder people from progressing.

Theme

Genre

The Valley of Plenty is a fantasy setting with mostly medieval technology, with firearms and other advanced technology still emerging.

Reader Experience

While the valley is meant to evoke a sense of wonder, it also feels dangerous. Too much is still unknown, so both the players and others are only slowly exploring. There are plenty of signs that within the valley lie foes as of yet unbeatable.

Reader Tone

With the constant feeling of dread, as well as factions with ulterior motives, the valley isn't as bright as one could imagine, but still brightish with a fair glow.

Recurring Themes

  1. The game trail had far less wolf tracks, showing that the area had become safer.
  2. A distant roar sent a shudder down the party's spines. Within this area they were still prey.
  3. There was no emotion visible in the observer's eyes, a concerning fact but irrelevant during the celebration.

Character Agency

The players will not be the only ones impacting the valley, but their actions will definitely play a big part. They will act as knights that will slowly help bring salvation.

Focus

The Wilds: Within the many forests in the valley, both danger and rewards can be found. As explorers slowly scout the places, none know exactly what they may uncover.
The Depths: Deep did the original inhabitants dig, leaving behind a labyrinth of tunnels. Now other creatures have moved in, making the mines a place that needs fighting for.
The Runes: All throughout the valley, strange runes can be found. Their secrets need lots of research to uncover.
The Capital: The fallen capital still holds plenty of secrets. Exploring it may seem trivial, but overgrown as it is, it will not reveal things easily.
The Fall: How did the valley fall? What really ended it?
The Liars: How goes the war? What are the various factions up to? Who can actually be trusted?

Drama

The valley houses an eco-system with many predators, which need to be chased off or defeated to protect the new inhabitants. And with disrupting an eco-system, a chain reaction can lead to serious consequences.
The dead were warded in the valley, what for? What did the previous inhabitants know, what did they fear?
Throughout the valley, traces of damage can be found that cannot be explained by the hands of time. What causes this, is it something still to be feared?
Supplies are limited, so the new inhabitants must prepare as quick as they can. They cannot depend on good fortune of crops and fish, what if the seasons turn against them? What if they can never return home?
There are multiple factions in the valley that are present in greater numbers than expected. How did they prepare for the move? Who knows too much, who can still be trusted?
When an experienced party goes missing, how can rookies fill the gap? How does one find out what happened, without falling for the same hazard?
Equipment is limited, so proper mines must be found and secured.
Will the king win or lose his war? What about everyone's families?
