Concord Character in Up&Down | World Anvil

Concord

Smooth bastard. Irredeemable capitalist.

Early Life

Concord was born into a clan of travelling mercenaries. Even as a child, he made a good impression on his kin by having a quick wit and being curious about many things. He was really good with numbers and spatial perception, too. But some of the adults noted with concern that he also seemed to have a way with lying and manipulating to get what he wanted.   Accompanying his parents on hunts, he showed an interest in weapons and was eager to learn about their properties. As soon as he was old enough to hold a rifle himself, he participated in hunting with good success. He was not allowed to join the raids of his clan until he was a teen, however.

Adolescence & Adulthood

Life with the clan was rather austere. Despite them not having to starve all the time, their work as mercenaries didn't really make them rich, either. They just got by, barely. Concord knew that his clan wasn't wealthy, and by the time he turned 18, he also understood that there was wealth out there.   During one of their jobs, the raid went disastrously wrong. Concord lost his father and suffered severe injuries himself. While recovering, he realized that his current way of life had no fulfilling future. He didn't want to die a poor man.

Establishing Himself

He soon made the decision to leave his clan and look for greener pastures. After running away, he arrived at a new area and started building a reputation for himself by accepting mercenary jobs. Seeing as this was just his old life over again, though, he realized a "shortcut" to making more money with less amount of actual work involved - instead of carrying out the jobs himself, he recruited other mercenaries to do them for him, then collected the pay for "his" job and paid the other mercenaries less than he got.   This went surprisingly well. Concord quickly found out that there was a huge profit to make from this strategy. He ended up creating a sort of cartel, and enjoyed the benefits shamelessly. This went on for a few years. During this time, he also branched out. With lots of leftover loot from raids that his "employees" collected and his clients didn't need, he ended up opening a shop and selling this random junk to travellers. This turned into his "day job" for the most part - he didn't have much else to do anyway with everyone else doing the actual work for him.

But He Has Enemies

Not everything was going smoothly, however. While Concord's profits flourished, he started making enemies for himself. His business model had turned into somewhat of a pyramid scheme when his employees realized they could do the same he did and recruited their own merchants and mercenaries to work for them. Many folks watched this with concern, and most importantly, jealousy.   Concord had become rather infamous in the whole area, and eventually one of the mercenary guilds that he was in the process of putting out of business decided to simply get rid of him.   Despite surviving the assassination attempt, Concord knew he had to leave. He grabbed all the money he could take with him and left behind his whole business (which later collapsed in itself through infighting and greed among its participants), started over in a different town.

Never A Humble Man

While he still had his ambitions in his heart, Concord knew to lay low for a while. He introduced himself as a common merchant and opened a shop in the trading town Vägkorset. This became his main occupation for the following years, while he mused about new ways to make a fortune. In this time, he again recruited some mercenaries to work for him and provide his shop with supplies, but this time, kept the whole deal manageable.   One of these mercenaries was a young woman that he fell in love with quickly; he gave her expensive gifts and courted her feverishly, but she refused all of his advances. This went on for a while, but every now and then the mercenary would do or say something that kept Concord's hopes up. Eventually, she joined him in his room over a concerning amount of wine. The next morning when Concord woke up with the mother of headaches, she was gone - and so was a large amount of his savings.   He never found out why she had done this or what became of her. He was heartbroken for quite a while longer than that - not that he got too much of a chance to dwell on that. In order to recover from his financial loss, he had turned to shady business practices that involved, and weren't limited to, sending his mercenaries after the competition's supply convoys, indirectly being responsible for shops burning down, and economic scams.

A New Life... Again

Once again, his antics escalated to the point where a lynch mob was sent after him. This time, however, he had to run quite far. He ended up fleeing from the Far Lands altogether, hounded by angry competitors. Arriving in the North, he was unsure how to regain his wealth this time. He came across a clan that calls itself the Legion, and swiftly recruited himself, seeing a great opportunity.   Since then, he's been in charge of managing the resources of a few of their units, with remarkable success (though while also gaining a bit of a reputation among the troops as being somewhat on the take under certain... conditions). He's determined to rise in their ranks and enrich himself through whatever means necessary.
