Artifice | Thicket of Thorns

Artifice

Artifice is a world of never-ceasing machinery. Everywhere is the sound of engines and the massive cogs that form the landscape. One misstep and one might fall into gears and be slowly crushed to death.

Geography

There are walkways and spaces where one can move amongst the machines that form all of Artifice. Everywhere is dirty, with sot and grease from the endless chimneys and pipes. Most metal is rusted, despite being constantly repaired by the robots that originate here.   In order to move around, one has to travel a landscape that is constantly being rebuilt and reconfigured in patterns that seem to follow an inevitable logic understandable only to the Aeon who controls it all.

Ecosystem

There is no life in the traditional sense here. Not for long, anyway. The machine produces independently moving robots that take care of tasks that require mobility, but they are just an extension of the overall functions. They will kill anyone who impedes their tasks, damages equipment, or they might have use for parts from. This is never personal or emotional. Everything is just a matter of the machine ticking one step further. The movements of it are inevitable and unyielding.

History

There no recorded instance of anyone visiting Artifice earlier than the 1500s CE, but all Aeons were created along with the universe itself, so it stands to reason that the plane has been there since then. The machinery has evolved along with the technology known on other planes but has always had the same style of constantly ticking forward.   Some theories that Artifice is the engine that makes the world able to progress. It is the clockwork that not just measures time, but creates it.
