Karllin

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Karllin, The Most serene Republic, is a most intriguing republic, held by seemingly chaotic rules, but in the truth, highly efficient in thier dealings. Karlin is a polity, which came in conjunction with Saruun and Zakir Arbas teleported themselves from the deteriorating continent. itself to Epeoris.

Structure

The new ruling class of Karlinn since the catostraphy, the monks of Nyx, have ascended to prominence and hold significant influence over the society. They had banned all worship of all that is Divine and Primal. Though the monks claim, they are not worshipping any gods or goddesses, are rumored to be still tied to the Primordial.   The Nyx monks constitute the ideological governing body of the country. They do not deal with daily affairs, but rather with the preaching of Nyx, erasing any mention of the gods, and legitimizing the civil government in the country. To ensure that there is no worship of gods in the country, the Convent of the Night Enforcers was established, an organization aimed at finding and eliminating any form of worship or mention of the gods in the country.   Elections for the central government are held once every 10 years. Any citizen can run for the position of the ruler. The main Nyx monastery approves (or disapproves) the candidates. For the election itself, a list of between 8 to 20 citizens will be presented. The Nyx monks have the option to present candidates who did not nominate themselves; such a nomination is considered a great honor and these candidates are often regarded as more senior in the eyes of the people and receive more votes than others. Refusing such a nomination is very rare and might be considered treason.   Each of the Beh holds a special status, especially in matters of faith and inspiration, and therefore if for some reason one of the Beh disqualifies a candidate, that candidate is removed from the list without appeal. Such intervention is very rare, as material and daily matters are of less importance to the Beh.   There will be no fewer than 8 candidates. According to the election results, the 10 candidates who receive the most votes will each serve one year, in the order of their selection (the one who receives the most votes serves in the first year, the second place in the second year, and so on). In case candidate number 9, for example, cannot serve, candidate number 10 will serve in their place, and the candidate who came in 11th place will serve next. If there are eight or nine candidates, then candidates one and two will serve in the ninth and tenth years respectively.   The rest of the elected candidates will serve as the advisory council to the ruling leader, with the leader always having about 30% of the voting power (rounded up, never below 30%). For example, if 10 representatives are elected to the council, the leader effectively has 5 out of 14 possible votes (about 35%). If 9 representatives are elected, the leader will have 4 out of 13 votes (30%). If there is a majority in the advisory council against the leader's decision, the leader can choose to withdraw the decision, pass it to the Nyx order for a decision, or put it to a referendum. A tie in the advisory council is considered support for the decision.   A leader who fails in two referendums is immediately removed from office, and the next leader in line takes their place. Passing the decision to the Nyx order can also be dangerous because the Nyx monks do not like being involved in civil matters and might decide to transfer it to a referendum or dismiss the leader immediately.   If a leader is removed before the end of their term, the next leader will still only serve one year, and after the tenth leader, the next in line will serve until the elections (or up to a year if more than one leader did not finish their term, and then the next in line will serve after them, and so on). A leader will never serve more than one year in a row.

Culture

The society of Karlin has transformed into a diverse amalgamation of rogues, thieves, warriors, and skilled individuals. With the absence of paladins and the rise of the monks of Nyx, Karlinn have embraced a more unconventional approach to governance and societal norms. The ruling class relies on cunning, secrecy, and calculated maneuvers to maintain their authority, while the general populace comprises a mixture of skilled fighters, resourceful rogues, and cunning individuals who navigate the intricacies of this new social order. Karllin have become a place where survival of the fittest is a prevailing principle. It is a land where wit, skill, and adaptability are highly valued, and where individuals must rely on their own abilities to thrive. While the outlawing of paladins, clerics and all that is divine and tied to the deities - the prominence of rogues and thieves may initially appear chaotic, the society of the Karllin has its own set of codes and rules that govern the interactions among its members. Honor among thieves and the respect for skill and cunning are highly regarded, creating a unique social fabric that has adapted to this new era.

History

Karllin were once ruled by paladins but by The Gods War, the Autocracy underwent a significant transformation after a plot aided by Masech, Nyx, and Khaziba resulted in the overthrow of the knights and paladins of the realm. In the aftermath, Karllin became a most serene republic, but one marked by a stark shift in power dynamics and the outlawing of paladins within their lands. As a result, paladins are hunted ferociously by the ruling class, which surprisingly consists of the monks of Nyx.

Religion

Despite the changes, the influence of Nyx, the deity revered by the ruling class, permeates the society of the Karlinn. The monks of Nyx serve as both spiritual guides and enforcers of the republic's laws and claiming to be a pawn-free of the gods.
