The Fall of Ageia Physical / Metaphysical Law in The Mortal Lands | World Anvil

The Fall of Ageia

Research Log, April 27 1823   After months of painstaking research and many, many trips through the Begoria mountains, I can confidently say that no trace of Ageia remains on the surface of the Mortal lands. There are traces, however, of Source riverbeds that once flowed through this area. At least, according to both the Mage and the Mechanical that have accompanied me on the expedition. And these Wellsprings of magic don't exactly vanish into thin air.   According to the natural laws of science, Magic is an energy, one very inclined to move. Sources are natural regulators for this magic, manifesting where the many riverbeds of magic meet and helping send it on its way again. The people of Ageia, who of course were well-trained in the use of Sources as this was before the time of Wizards, would have monitored its usage closely. There are multiple references to the Source kept within Ageia's central plaza.   Could something have happened to the Source, I wonder? What would happen if that much energy was incited or activated all at once? Or, I shudder to think, someone prevented the Source from regulating the riverbeds around it? Causing all that magic to build, and to grow.   I shudder at the thought. only a Wizard would be so cruel.

Manifestation

Fire. Fire and Smoke and Death.    There are no eyewitness testimonies from anyone who was in a twenty mile radius of the city-anyone within perished within minutes. Farms from the fields far to the south reported columns of smoke and ash that seemed to reach the Heavens themselves. The ground shook as the mountain Ageia was built on split open, spewing fire and molten earth. The closest testimony is from the Josea, a prophet of the Creator who was bade to leave by his master before the city vanished. According to biblical texts he was twenty-five miles from the city, standing on a hilltop with the Agiean army, who had followed their commander out of the city in protest to Vizer Quelar's request to disband the unit.   The source claims that the city sat on the mountainside was there and then... in a flash of magic and blue light, it was gone, the rock underneath it crumbling away as the mountain exploded. Researchers believe that the Source was overloaded, causing it to explode. This theory, however, contrasts with the Abaisi's cultural need to safeguard and protect the Sources. A Source in their own dominion could not reasonably have been left unchecked or unguarded.

Localization

The Fall of Ageia was centralized on its Source, which stood in the center of the city outside the Temple. The shockwaves from the event could be felt from miles away, as the earth tore itself to shreds. The aftershocks could be felt as far away as the coast, as the riverbeds of magic that flowed through the land were ripped up and re-routed. It's speculated that this was the cause of the 'Twin Sources' phenomenon that manifested in Linder for a few centuries before naturally dissipating.
Oh, Ageia!
City of our Ancestors and our Creator!
How Low have we fallen, How cursed are we!
That our maker should turn his eyes from us
and leave us to turn to ash in the fires of the Infernal realms.
Our pride has become our ruin
and our folly has earned us naught but scorn.
Oh, Creator who walks the heavens!
Turn your eyes unto your children and grant us mercy
from this inferno that has consumed us all.
~The Prophet Josea

Agiea

Cultural Kingdom and center of the Abaisi, the Creator's chosen children to fufill his plan for creation. Established after the people were led out of slavery and granted dominion over the land, Agiea was to be their hope and future. Alas, the children of the Creator went astray again and again, following false gods in a need for immediate fufillment and tempted by power. The Chuch of the Creator teaches that, while the Creator himself does not create or incite evil, he will use evil in the world to promote his own good. Though Agiea was lost, it galvanized the scattered remnants into a more cohesive and loyal whole, if diminished in global power and influence.

Hmm! Where did they go? Teleported away or destroyed. Good mystery with the event.

This is one of the points I warn young worldbuilders and authors about; Even if your characters don't know what happened, *you* need to. I know exactly where the remains of Aegia are. Whether or not I shall ever publish that story remains to be seen.
