Reginald Goodvich Character in The Mortal Lands | World Anvil

Reginald Goodvich

Reginald Goodvich (a.k.a. Reggie, Reg)

A Young Historian who finds himself on the course of greatness when a mysterious journal falls into his possession.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Reginald is a historian by trade; sports have never held his interest or are a part of his daily routine. While he's been blessed with good health, he's not physically fit by any means; he can lift a stack of books and that's it.

Apparel & Accessories

Reginald dresses neatly and respectfully, although he tends to favor browns and greens that match his hair. Men's fashion, regretfully, doesn't have much in the way of imagination, which suits him fine.

Mental characteristics

Education

Reginald is currently finishing his Senior year at Poartlind University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Mira, or even all of the Eastern Seaboard. His passion for history, particularly the Late Marble era when the power of Wizards began to wane and Mages began to come to power fascinates him. He can read and translate the languages of the era quite well, but likely wouldn't understand them well if spoken aloud.   He will graduate with a Bachelor's in History, Marble Era focus.

Employment

Reginald is not currently employed in a full time capacity.; his family is wealthy enough to cover his education costs. He covers living expenses by tutoring part-time, especially on history and social topics.    This being said, recent adventures with a particular journal and the interest of the Church may open up new opportunities for him once he finishes his education.

Intellectual Characteristics

Reginald is not only intelligent, but has the most common sense out of the usual trio of Him, his cousin Elijah, and his friend Anessa. While history is his preferred topic of conversation, he is conversable in a variety of topics not related to the arts, unless it somehow relates to history. Take him to an opera, and he'll talk about its historical significance rather than the ability of the performers.    Being the one with the most common sense between him and his cousin, Reginald has learned to think quickly and identify tools or items that may be of use to him later in the day. Where his cousin is concerned, this usually indicates sources of water or other fire-extinguishing methods.

Morality & Philosophy

Reginald is a Member of the Church of the Creator, and does his best to follow its laws and precepts. This being said, it has come to his attention that there is far more to the Church than he was originally aware of, and has been working to rectify the gaps in his knowledge.    His faith in the Creator has been strenthened through recent trials, and he is learning that there is a time to read and study, and a time to simply open one's heart and listen.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Reginald is motivated by learning; discovering hidden nuggets of history and how they tie together to influence other events. He wants to find a position with a research institute after he graduates, preferrably one that allows him to stay safe in a library and pull secrets from bookshelves. Considering his family's reputation, however, this is not likely to come to pass.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

History, specifically the Late Marble Era, is Reginald's chief purview. If there's research to be done or a book to be found, the family comes to him for advice. He also has the skills to be a teacher, although he has not seen these qualities in himself yet and therefore hasn't seen it as a potential career field.   On the flip side, he has a hard time understanding the arts; He's more likely to break something down to its historical significance, what the art is made of and how the artist would have realistically aquired those materials rather than sit and enjoy the art in question.

Virtues & Personality perks

Reginald is Honest and Loyal, as evidenced by the amount of time he spends not only with his cousin Elijah, but with Anessa, who does not have near as many social scruples as he.    He's also discerning and quick on his feat, reacting to changes in environment and circumstance quickly. Although this is, again, due to his relationship with his cousin.

Personality Quirks

Reginald tends to tap his fingers on something when he's thinking intently. If he's holding something small in his hands, he'll tap that on something else. It drives his cousin up the wall.   He will also talk about History non-stop if prompted. He's aware of this quirk and does his best to keep it to a minimum when in social company. With contemporaries, though, all bets are off.

Social

Family Ties

Reginald is very close with several members of the Goodvich Family, the closest being his cousin Elijah. They practically grew up as brothers, Reginald watching out for his cousin as Elijah came into his gift of Magic and began his own studies. Even now as they attend college, they are nigh inseparable.
