The gods - celestial, devil, or otherwise - are a known fact of the universe in Dulūn. While everyone knows and can agree that they exist, not all worship them. The terms "atheist" and "agnostic" refer to those who, for whatever reasons of their own, do not woship or attribute merit to the gods. These folk are often scoffed at or looked down upon, dismissed as their philosophy will only get them forsaken.

Atheism

To be atheist is to believe that the gods are not actually gods, in the sense that most would think of them. While atheists do agree that the gods are beings of immense power, they do not believe them to be fundamentally any different than mortals. They are simply powerful mages or casters that have found ways to artificially extend their lifespan and have accomplished great feats. While most atheists are also agnostic, this is not always the case: some atheists hold this belief, but still worship the gods regardless.

Agnosticism

To be agnostic, on the other hand, is to believe that the gods are not worthy of worship. A person can be agnostic without being atheist, though being athiest is very common among agnostics. The most popular reason for being agnostic is a belief that the gods are neither infallible nor good, and should not be worshipped as such. Some become agnostic due to a specific hatred of certain gods in particular, which they have applied generally to all gods. It is also possible to be agnostic towards one god while worshipping another, though this is less common.

I love this explanation as to why some people wouldn't worship gods that are proven to exist. Great little article.
