Cykosis Condition in Tequila Starrise | World Anvil

Cykosis

Cykosis is the plague of the 10th Century. It has claimed the lives of millions directly and even more people indirectly. Cykosis is a cy-neurological desease associated with the extreme use of neuro-enhancing cybernetic hardware and software. It is most commonly seen in users of fastchips but it's not necessarily linked with its use.

Pathology

Cykosis develops as the the hardware and software interfacing with a users organic neural pathway begins to damage those neural pathways. Commonly to due to overcharging or continious strain. In most cases long exposure and usage of these interfaces can lead to stroke or even worse, a cykotic episode.

Cykotic Episode

During a cykotic episode the user loses completely control over his actions. Most commonly all bodily functions of the user are overtaken by their nanocomputer which goes into a buffer loop, in effect acting subconsiously to their environment by making full use of their reflex network and fastchips (if one is available). During a cykotic episode the user runs a very high chance of suffering a stroke but in the cases that this doesn't occur many users turn feral, losing most of their ability to interact directly with the world and are taken over by their nanocomputer.

Transmission & Vectors

Cykosis cannot be transmitted from individual to individual but the use of cybernetics is a cultural phenomenon. The insertion of a nanocomputer and in some cases a reflex network is quite common practice for most of the population above the poverty line in the Core Worlds.   The last 200 years, it has also become very common for thrill seeking youngsters to install fastchips and to do so in chop shops where neither the hygiene standards are high or the people doing the installation properly educated. That means that in many cases the calibration of the fast chip might be way off. A fast chip not normally calibrated can be a real danger for both the life of the wearer and the people around them.
