The Diasporan Species in Tamyrh | World Anvil

The Diasporan

The term "Diasporan" comes from the ancient Korlo word "D'easpri Ahn" and loosely translates to "jetsam". It is unclear when it was first applied to the non-Korlo refugees, but it stuck and has become the name for the entire group. The Ankor adopted the term and refer to those who came after the settlement of Ankoresh as such.

Basic Information

Anatomy

All of the humanoid groups on Tamyrh have standard human appearances on the outside.
Example: Two arms, two legs, two eyes, a nose, two ears, a mouth, two hands, two feet, eight fingers, two thumbs, ten toes...
Note: Variations of coloration, internal structures, and modifications of the above-listed anatomical features may apply.

Biological Traits

The Diasporan can have any mix of inherited biological characteristics. The distinct aspects of each species are described in other articles. A "throwback" is where an individual exhibits 3 or more of the unique genetic markers of an ancestor.

Genetics and Reproduction

Over the centuries, the Diasporan's reproductive systems have become homogenous enough for viable offspring to be produced with each pregnancy. Problems only arise when the fetus has one of the old blood-groups, and the mother has a modern type.
Pregnancy lasts anywhere between 7 to 10 months now, regardless of heritage.
Multiple births still happen among those with Ebo and Drakkar heritage, but they are no longer the norm.
Through careful management via the Diasporan Pairing Protocol, KMR&D has managed to halt the decline of the Tyran and Birlo elements in the population.

Factlets:

  • The Ebo blood group works well as a universal donor and is present in 50% of the population.
  • Two new blood-groups have emerged within the Diasporan population over the last 800 years, and 35% of the existing population have them. The individuals who have these respond well to modern drugs and synthetic organ replacements, but have higher instances of lung-related disease. These individuals are ill-suited for and are now medically disqualified from work that would take them topside.
  • Tyran and Birlo blood-types are the remaining 15%, and neither tolerates modern drugs or synthetic organ replacements.

Growth Rate & Stages

Diasporan growth rates would be considered to be accelerated by our standards. With the exception of the under 1-year-old group, each age group up until puberty has a specific, education-based routine they follow. The following schedule does not show the child's free time (which exists), it is based entirely on the framework established by Korlune Military Research and Development, in conjunction with each Diaspora's Canton.
According to KMR&D's nomenclature:
  • Age: 0 - 1 is "infant" - Diasporan registry takes genetic sample for records.
  • Age: 1 - 4 is " early-child" - development of verbal and motor skills is monitored. Areas of concern are noted and assistance is given if needed.
  • Age: 5 - 8 is "mid-child" - first screening for the Prodigy Program takes place. Talents are noted, education path is crafted.
  • Age: 9 - 12 is "late-child" - second screening for the Prodigy Program takes place. Education is further tailored to suit natural proclivities.
  • Age 13 is puberty. Rites of passage take place, basic training begins, the Prodigy Program enlistment for KMR&D takes place, and those who've shown the aptitude are directed into advanced training.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Unlike the Korlo, the Diasporan diet has become very 'simple'. Rich or spicy food is virtually indigestible as they lack many of the necessary enzymes to break down the additives. Centuries of dealing with untreated foods has given them an advantage though, in that their systems can process food that would be toxic to the Korlo.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The Department of the Interior ceased housing those with Birlo ancestry with those who had Tyran heritage after riots destroyed several neighborhoods in Rostel. Those with Drakkar and the Ebo markers could be placed with any group, and as the Ebo were the most numerous, all of the Diaspora have a sizable Ebo population.
The structure of 'social acceptability' in Korlune goes as follows:
  • 1. Korlo
  • 2. Ebo mix
  • 3. Drakkar mix
  • 4. Birlo mix
  • 5. Ankor
  • 6. Tyran mix

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Diasporan were chattel until Althera Doncaster, and a small group of Ranking Korlo founded the Par Society. One-hundred years later, Korlune still operates with a two-tier justice system, but Diasporan rights are growing.
Diasporan are still a source of:
  • Cheap labor
  • Soldiers
  • Test subjects

The Diasporan can have any mix of characteristics based on their heritage. The distinct aspects of each species are described in other articles.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

  • Those with Tyran heritage practice civil disobedience by giving their children the family surname that was stripped from their ancestors as a first or middle name.
  • Descendants of the Birlo give their children two names: one is only used until they reach puberty, and the other is granted when they go through their rite of passage. They are tattooed then.
  • Traditionally, Drakkar infants weren't given an official name until they turned five, referred to simply as "Gei Sprog*." Their descendants honored this practice until KMR&D required all Diasporan births to be registered. This naming tradition was halted due to the confusion it generated.
  • Those with Ebo heritage have embraced the practice of naming their children Korlo names, but, in rare instances, someone will get a pre-cataclysm name. Like the Birlo, they have kept their rite of passage ritual. Puberty is when the newly fledged adults receive their tattoos.

  • Clan Destine

Beauty Ideals

Among the Diasporan it varies according to personal taste. Classic Ebo features are considered to be the most beautiful, followed by Drakkar. The Birlo look would place third and those with Tyran attributes are a distant fourth.

Gender Ideals

It's entirely based on personal taste.

Courtship Ideals

If you are Diasporan, the Pairing Protocol has taken all the guess-work out of choosing your partner. You are presented with your first suitable candidate shortly after you turn 17, and this individual is matched to you based on common interests, backgrounds, faith, and physical preferences. There is a genetic component in the selection to guarantee relatives aren't matched. Once the pairing is agreed to by both parties, they are granted permission to produce two children. Some pairings choose to remain together after this point, and marry. Some do not. Once two children have been produced, both parents are sterilized to prevent overpopulation.

What if they hate each other on sight?

Each person has 3 "vetoes" where they can turn down a match if they find fault with it. Many will use their first veto, and some will use 2. Few use all their vetoes, but it does happen.
Note: If the issue is gender-based, the couple may claim "extenuating circumstances" and an alternative method of conception will take place. Once two children are produced, the pairing is considered complete.

Relationship Ideals

Whatever makes you happy... or what your traditions require of you.

Average Technological Level

The Diasporan occupy cities that the Korlo lived in while they were constructing the Cluster Cities. These cities are older and the tech is often decades (or even centuries) behind the Korlo standard.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

All Diaspora have a written and verbal form of unique polyglot of the one of the original languages, mixed with Ebo, and referred to as "slang".

Example: Diaspora 12 is known locally as Astel. The slang spoken there is Astelang

Most Diasporan can only speak Korlo and their native slang - learning other slangs can be difficult, depending on its root tongue. Oddly enough all the curse words and toasts are universally understood.
Diasporan working with KMR&D have developed a gesture-only language known simply as "sign," and use it in the noisier enviroments, or when they wish to be covert. A few of the Korlo staff have picked it up.

History

Two-thousand years ago, the cataclysm struck Tamyrh, and fifteen-hundred years have passed since the founding of Korlune. It was then that the banishment of the Balai* and their cohorts took place. Eight-hundred years have passed since the Xanthium Campaigns, when the last, great wave of Birlo, Drakkar, Ebo, and Tyran refugees arrived via the tunnels. Eight-hundred years ago, Korlune shut her borders and sealed the remaining tunnels leading in or out...

Little is known about what's happening in the greater world now. Few have managed to find their way into Ankoresh.
*The Balai - Renamed themselves the Ankor after the expulsion.
**Par'Uhn - Drakkar for underfoot.
