Le Cotenson

Area

Le Cotenson is a long coastal area of Francalia. In the north, it has a border with Malroque , further down the hills of Fortdun provides a natural border with that state.   Le Contencon has traditionally stopped in the south at the River Cailleu. Beyond the river lies (for now) the Kingdom of Francalia and Terres de Lancet.

Habitat

- Deciduous Forest

in the north of Contenson, The Taiga Forest gives way to Deciduous Forests . The forest provides quality oak for the navy galleons of the Republique.   The coast boasts of several important naval yards where the Republique fabled superiority in naval armaments has been forged over the last century.

- Downs/Dones (Hills)

The eastern border with the state of Fortdun is made of the last hills of The Dones . The Dones are a range of mainly low green hills. The hills are great pastures for farmed animals such as cows and sheep.   Going towards the coastal plains the climate becomes mild enough to grow red fruit, patates and other cold climate roots. In the summer, fields are also harvested for hay.   The south-facing valleys are also well known to grow barley, which is then used to brew the famous strong alcohol of the Dones known as the Eaufeu (fire water).

- Coastal Marshes in the Delta

The river Cailleu is one of the most important river of Francalia. It comes out of the Lac Bleu and throws itself into The Ocean by forming a huge marshy   The marshes are mainly salty nearer the ocean and are subjects to the tides. The cold marshes are a wilderness known in Francalia for its rich animal life.   The few human settlements who have chosen to dwell there live on fishing, the feather trade, and horse rearing. The grassy heights that create green islands of pastures are ideal to breed horses and cattle.   Horses from this area are a pure white breed well known throughout Francalia for their hardiness and beauty.

- Coastal plain, Machair

The plains along the ocean are harsh and will get very cold and stormy in the winter despite the maritime influence.   However, the short warm summer months will provide sustenance for hardy breeds of sheep and goats. People living in The Machairs will plant hedges of the very wind and salt resistant Broomy tree to protect their croft and food production.   More affluent inhabitants will build high stone walls around their garden and holdings to provide shelter for their crops and animals.   Fishing is also a big industry for the crofters of the Machairs. Not only fishing, but seafood of all sorts is abundant in the cold waters of the Ocean.   The main money in the region will be made in the harbours dotted along the coast. The harbours and naval yards are key to maintaining the Republique as a viable concern in Francalia.   Through the Contenson harbours, the Republique can trade with other Francalian cities, in particular the immensely rich independent Free Cities of the south.   It can also launch its armies to mount offensives against the King of Francalia's kingdoms from there if need be.
