Fortdun

Area

Fordun is the center of the Republique in Francalia. Its Northern borders is with Malroque with which it has close links. On its eastern side lies the Landes Dasques and in the west, is the coastal region of Cotenson.   Very importantly, in the south, it owns a proportion of the shore on the Lac Bleu. It has also a fairly lengthy border along the River Cailleu with the Kingdom of Francalia and the Kingdom of Lancet.

Habitat

- The Dones

Most of the Dones hill range can be found in the north of Fordun. The Downs have always been known for their great mineral deposits.   From antiquity, Fordun metalworkers have created weapons and exquisite objects and jewelry from the mines dotted all along the range. This made the merchant class of Fortdun very prosperous, and influential within the Fordun society.   So much so, that three centuries ago the merchant class took over the reins of power in Fortdun and declared the country a Republique.   The Downs are also a good source of pastures for sheep, cows, and other domesticated animals. Meat and wool have been another important source of income and trade for Fortdun humans.

- The Plain

Between the Downs and the shores of the Lac Bleu, lies the fertile grassy plain of Fortdun. Much of the plain was marshy in nature in the past, but the Fortdun steadholders have been very adept in draining the plain, and it has now become the bread basket of the North.   Hardy cereals have been grown on those lands for generations.

- The Lake Shore

The windy plateau of Mortalac forms the eastern border of the Fordun lakeshore. The birth of the River Cailleu on the western side is its limits to the west. Fortdun has been using the trading opportunities the Lac offers for centuries now. Fordun's ports are the largest and most important on the lake.   The Fortdun merchants have been transporting the goods they produce by boats across the Lac and beyond. In the past, the Kingdom of Francalia has tried to impose an embargo on Fordun's goods.   However, the embargo proved hard to control especially in the northern regions of the kingdom. Money talks, and soon, Fordun traders were making all sorts of deals with their neighboring Francalian kingdoms.   Nowadays, there is no embargo on the Republique's goods and trade is booming again, but the King's secret officers have been known to try to compromise the Republique's products in a bid to make them less attractive to the rest of the country.
