Dravir

Oh, the Dravir? They're our progeny. They came to be after a few of our kind got too comfortable in bipedal forms and could no longer revert to their draconic form... nature, as they say, had its say from then on, and the dravir have spread far and wide.
— Mym, Elder Dragon of Fire
The dravir are the bipedal descendants of the Imperial Dragons, and initially the term was actually coined by the imperial dragons - a usecase that is still true today - to differentiate their bipedal draconic forms (something all imperial dragons can use) from their traditional quadrupedal forms. Today, that variant of the dravir is known as the True Dravir - literally just being an imperial dragon in a bipedal draconic form - while the dravir as an ancestry have become quite distinct from their ancestors.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Anatomically, dravir resemble humanoid, bipedal dragonkin, with scales (or fur), wings (but sometimes not) and a bipedal frame as opposed to the traditional quadrupedal frame of the Imperial Dragons. There does exist some subtle variation (and some larger variations) between the many types of dravir, not unlike imperial dragons. There are five broad types of dravir, covered below. Many dravir types have wings, but aside from the wyverns, these wings are decorative or for slowing the rate of falling only, they are not usable for flight without the aid of a Minor Dragonification Ritual invoked by an Imperial Dragon.

Lung

Lung completely lack wings and are known for generally being quite furry in nature. Generally regarded to be the most beautiful and regal of the dravir, they also often have a pair of sensitive whiskers which improve their greater senses for magia-detection (among other things), and allow them to utilise their magical potential more readily.

Wuivre

Generally regarded as the 'standard' for the dravir, the wuivre are physically capable and generally more lacking magically - though they still have some magical potential, mind. They're famous for their large, leathered wings (though some can be feathered) and physical adaptations, including greater strength and raw power.

Wyrm

Like the lung, wyrms are notable for their magical power and their adaptations to aquatic life; they often have fins and sails, along with sometimes having webbed feet, and their physical strength is middling at best. Curiously, unlike Imperial Dragon wyrms, dravir wyrms can have wings, and they can have wings of many types, including leathered, feathered, watery, crystalline, and so on.

Wyvern

Known for being very physically frail and relatively lacking magical potential, wyverns have a set of wings that are integrated into their arms as opposed to being a part of their back, which allows them to actually fly with their wings naturally, unlike all other dravir (aside from winged kobolds).

Kobold

The most curious form of dravir, the kobolds are often derided as the runts of the ancestry, and nobody knows their origins. They're known for their small size, scaled hides and lack of wings, on top of their frailty, but there is a rare mutation for kobolds that allows them to be born with wings. Such kobolds are far more potent, and often lead kobold clans.

Biological Traits

While they're not as impressive as Imperial Dragons with regards to abilities, the dravir are known for their variety of abilities that derive from their draconic heritage, and this typically manifests in either physical superiority, magical superiority, or both in some rare cases. Each of the types of dravir excel in a different area of their biology; the lung excel at magic at the expense of everything else - a lung mage can match the Elves, even - which often makes them extremely frail. Interestingly, lung dravir have the potential to match the magical power of even non-lung Shimmerhorns, but most fail to realize that potential.
By contrast, the Wuivre are lacking magically, but are among the strongest physical ancestries on Pearalos, easily standing toe to toe with the Asteriox and Bataari, and losing only to the frightening strength of the Sarkaz in a straight contest of martial power. Wyverns prove to be lacking in both physical and magical elements, but they compensate for that with their natural ability to fly with their wings and their incredible agility and aerial acrobatics, which makes them formidable aerial fighters and keen proponents of hit and run combat.
The wyrms are perhaps the most notable case however; as a baseline generalisation, Wyrms are neither magically nor physically impressive, but the quality of their dynastic bloodline can result in them ranging from being the magical and physical equivalent of a tall kobold, all the way to standing toe to toe with the average lung - but not those few lung who reach their latent potential.
Finally, the Kobolds are incredibly weak and frail, and lacking in magic, but they are dextrous and agile, allowing them to work together effectively as a team, and when the rare Winged Kobold appears, they gain the boons of wyverns - the natural ability to fly and very significant aerial agility and acrobatics capabilities - as well as magic on par with the lower end of the lung, a dangerous combination indeed.

Genetics and Reproduction

The very first dravir were imperial dragons who became trapped in their bipedal forms, and the very first dravir children were made from two imperial dragons having children while both in aforementioned bipedal forms, and indeed, this is still possible today, even when an imperial dragon isn't locked into their true dravir form; these dravir are notably distinct to their regular counterparts, and are referred to as Imperial Dravir - referring their parentage by imperial dragons - and often have greater magical and physical qualities than normal, though not by too much. Of course, this is a very different discussion if an Elder Dragon sired such children, though as far as is known, the elder dragons have only ever opted to sire Shimmerhorn offspring when looking at non-imperial children, for unknown reasons
Outside of imperial dragons, the dravir reproduce as would be expected, they reproduce between themselves or with an imperial dragon (regardless of what form the dragon is in, notably, which makes the dravir a favourite collection item for imperial dragon hoards) to create more dravir (but not imperial dravir, those only come from two imperial dragons), and can also reproduce with the equine Fique to produce the famous Shimmerhorn hybrid ancestry, which is a topic for its own article.

Biological Cycle

Dravir - like all bestial ancestries - deal with periods of Heat; a period of time where they can be impregnated for reproduction, which is often a month in length and then doesn't return for a certain amount of time. For Humans, the analogue is the menstrual cycle. On a dravir, this cycle lasts 4 years and 4 months, with a heat itself lasting for 1 month before the next cycle begins. This is known as the heat cycle in the bestial world - the total time spent between the start of one heat period and the start of another, and for dravir this totals 4 years and 5 months (4 years and 4 months for the downtime, and 1 month for the heat period).

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Dravir are, by and large, quite intelligent, though their specific levels of intellect can vary broadly - all the way from being dumb as rocks to being among the smartest non-artificial beings on Pearalos, but on average they trend around the middle. Like with Human and Elf intellect, the dravir aren't the best at utilising their intellect, but they can achieve just about anything they set themselves to, given enough time and willpower.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dravir are quite well-adapted to smelling things and often have good hearing too - though not as good as some of their contemporaries. Beyond that, they are generally quite unremarkable, but the lung are notable, as their whiskers are profoundly effective (and sensitive) magia-sensors, allowing a lung to sense magical fluctuations and anomalies all across their local area, trace Essences and Skills being used, and track magia-use and magical beings, among other things.
Genetic Ancestor(s)
Genetic Descendants
Lifespan
200 - 300 years
Average Height
Dravir are, on average, between 6 and 7 feet in height, with the lung and wyrms generally being closer to the maximum of that range. Kobolds are closer to 3 or 4 feet tall.
Average Weight
Dravir are generally quite light, with their average weight ranging from 120 to 160 pounds, and the kobolds being even lighter - at between 50 and 80 pounds.
