Essences

Possession of an Awakened Atronach Core allows access to Essences. These are expressions of power and imbuements of some description, be they magical or technological. The possibilities are very vast, and completely decoupled from Classes at the core (Classes just provide more Essence Capacity), but the more powerful an Essence is, the higher Core Level is required to use it.
The total number of Essence available to be Equipped by a Corewalker is tied to their Essence Capacity attribute, which requires them to invest into Class options that focus upon magical or technological power (as it is unique to Class progression), such as the Mage or Artificer classes. Essences give access to Magical or Technological Powers, which are largely the same, but just differ in terms of feel.
Essences have power scaling inherent to them and do not rely upon attributes to improve their capabilities like traditional (or Stamina-based) attacks might. The attributes only govern how many Essences a Corewalker can Equip, and most forms of Essence feature scaling power metrics based upon their magia-expenditure, the Core Level of the Corewalker, or both.
Essences all require Magia to use, the reservoir of magical energy that is slowly replenished every hour, or more quickly replenished by consuming a Magia Potion or Elixir. The magia expenditure of a Essence is the only metric that is very experience-variable, with all Essences having a baseline magia cost that is altered by the refinement of that Essence.
The versatility of Essences is very notable, as each point Essence Capacity actually allows for five distinct Essences - be that five different magical powers or five different technological powers. Each Essence must be learned separately and uniquely through the medium of the System Exchange, but so long as they are all related, up to five can occupy a single point of Essence Capacity.
As stated, the only restriction is that they generally need to draw from the same overarching identity - magical and technological powers revolve around certain themes that define their capabilities, such as 'Detection', 'Air', 'Artifice', and so on. This restriction does generally mean that it isn't possible to combine magical and technological powers together in a single Essence Capacity point, though, as the themes forbid it, but it also effectively means that with enough effort to learn a variety of options, each point of Essence Capacity is worth five actual magical or technological powers.
Actually learning an Essence is a mixture of an academic process of studying and practicing the theory in the field, to build an idea for the Essence, before the System allows for the Essence to be purchased from the System Exchange and equipped. Certain essences - such as spellcraft-related essences, like the Fireball spell, for instance - are far more codified than others, and are easier to learn as a result.
Additionally, like with Abilities, it is possible to refine Essences, though this is not tied to any specific Classes, and is instead based on experience using the Essence and overall Core Level. Essence Refinements - like Ability Refinements - aren't guaranteed, with some kind of special Quest being issued by the System to obtain it, and each Essence has its own prerequisites to even unlock the refinement option to begin with.
