Bataari

Ours is a race that once knew true fear, true despair for deeds that we were not the enactors of. We have soldiered on since then, and through our discoveries have become one of this world's greatest ancestries, and we'll continue to carve our legacy.
— Lucia Aurelia, Bataari High-Geneticist
The infamous creators of the chimaera, the bataari are an ancestry of caprine goat-folk and the sibling-ancestry of the bavaari. The ancestry is one mired in fear, controversy, rampant technological exploitation, and all kinds of incredible and unnerving advances in science and magic alike.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The bataari resemble bipedal goats, possessing cloven hooves, a pair of horns, a tail, and fur, among other qualities. By and large, these properties are unremarkable, though their underlying anatomical benefits are anything but; they're incredibly durable, agile and strong all at once, and are capable of defeating basically anyone they wish - something they make frequent use of, in the pursuit of their experiments and advancements.

Biological Traits

Biologically, the bataari are surprisingly unremarkable; they possess profound lower body strength - being able to kick off of surfaces, jump very high, and so on - but they are otherwise not very special from a biological standpoint - which to the bataari is the result of an injustice wraught against them in ages past. Their genetic engineering, however, has greatly changed the modern versions of the bataari, with them generally possessing a huge variety of traits; some bataari possess chirovari night vision or echolocation, some possess elf beauty and magical techniques, and so on; the list is practically endless, provided the bataari have the subjects to test with and extract the genetic material from.

Genetics and Reproduction

Genetically, the bataari are truly something special; their understanding of genetics has allowed them to slowly, but steadily alter their very own genetic code, having gradually granted themselves their most famous properties - their supernatural genetic strength, their reinforced bodies, and their magical potential - counteracting their ancient affliction. The bataari reproduce normally for any given ancestry, and while they have long since discovered the genetics they'd need to make themselves compatible with just about any ancestry they please, there is an intense superiority complex that results in the bataari only reproducing with their own ancestry or the cervyr.

Behaviour

If the bataari are known for one thing, it's their callous disregard of life, combined with their intense superiority complex; they view most ancestries that aren't the vanari, cervyr and lapin (and a select few chimaera) as little more than vermin, and view their ability to capture and experiment upon them as a natural right they have over these 'lesser' beings. They're not all bark and no bite, either; the bataari absolutely reinforce their mindset with their deeds, and perhaps the most infamous of these was their genetic reengineering of the bavaari - their most sycophantic followers - to effectively become their obedient slaves.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The bataari originate from northern Thrain, in the Ru'ulde grasslands, alongside the bavaari, and they would go on to migrate west into the western Ru'ulde grasslands where the lapin reside, and would thus grow to become the lapin's closest ally - alongside the cervyr, who both ancestries highly venerate.
Nowadays, the bataari don't leave the lands of Thelan Lappinar unless they are seeking new test subjects or some other dubiously moral goal, and this makes them a very localized ancestry; the denizens of Shirahanai are mostly unaware of what a bataari even is for the most part.

Average Intelligence

The bataari are frighteningly intelligent, with an intellect rivalling that of the imperial dragons, and with a rather concerning frequency of intellectual prodigies that have made the technology and innovations of their society as infamous (and famous, depending on the circles involved) as they are; the bataari have an intense natural talent for magic too, which many put their intellect towards, but their natural scholarly intellect is truly first rate.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

For the longest time, the bataari possessed no special perceptive capabilities; their senses of smell, sight and hearing were relatively mundane, they had no magical senses, and in general they were completely pedestrian. Nowadays, however, this is not the case. The bataari have excellent smell and sight - and above average hearing, too - and they possess an excellent ability to sense flows of magia, granted from their constant genetic engineering attempts.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Few discussions of the Bataari would be complete without looking at the various institutions that support their arguably unethical inventions; the big one - Thelan Lappinar - is a topic better reserved for the Lapin document, but the Thelan Scientific Institute is the other most important institution that deals with the ongoing efforts of the bataari.
Ostensibly founded to promote scientific advancement using ancient precursor technologies that the lapin realm discovered, and funded through royal patronage, the institute quickly became known for sponsoring and funding genetics research, and when the bataari learned to change genetic code, the institute was among the first organizations to offer generous funding to push these techniques to their limit; it was through the institute that the bataari quickly earned their reputation for scientific excellence, fixing their myriad genetic deficiencies, and in time augmenting themselves greatly.
It was, of course, only a matter of time with this rampant experimentation that the experiments took rather more... dark turns, but rather than question such angles, the institute - and thus, the lappinar crown - tacitly endorsed them and increased funding. It's no lie to say that this is what led the bataari to the path they have eventually ended up on.

Average Technological Level

The bataari are very advanced technologically, easily exceeding even the fique and foxian ancestries in certain ways, though their technological advancements almost entirely concern the genetics sciences that they have been pioneering, with most other technological progression done by the vanari.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Bataari culture is one that prioritizes personal advancement, at the cost of non-bataari (and non-lapin, and non-cervyr in particular) individuals if need's be; their culture has little care for other ancestries than their own and their closest confidantes, and effectively treats other ancestries as far lesser than themselves; it's a mindset that is perhaps a little too close to the believed perspective of the Precursors on other life, even.
Beyond that, however, their culture is surprisingly meritocratic; skill and talent is what earns positions in bataari society, not inherited standing, and they have significant cultural and social mobility as a result; of course, they still adhere by the norms of the Thelan Lappinar - which are predominantly based on the cultural norms of the lapin and cervyr - but only to a degree.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

By and large, the bataari see all ancestries as beneath them, fit to be enslaved or experimented upon, and little else. They only make three exceptions: the bavaari, who they still see as below them but far less than other ancestries, the lapin and vanari, who they see as every bit their equal and long-time friends, and the cervyr, who are generally seen through a more complex lens, but to summarize it, cervyr nobility is seen as superior to the bataari, while 'regular' cervyr are seen as their equals and long-time friends.
Genetic Descendants
Lifespan
200 - 300 years, naturally
Average Height
The bataari are well known for their height, on average ranging between 7 and 8 feet tall; they're not the tallest non-giantkin ancestry, but they are definitely up there.
Average Weight
The bataari are surprisingly heavy, generally ranging from 400 pounds up to 600 or even 700 pounds.
Average Physique
The bataari are well known for their athletic builds, capable of immensely brutal kicks and having in general high levels of lower body strength. This was always notable, but their genetic tinkering has only made their builds more notable with time.
