Moonbeams

Moonbeams aren't the only source of magic for The Followers of Hecate, but they are among the most powerful and fuel some of their most epic spells.

A Source of Moonbeams

According to the High Priestess of Hecate, the moon has no light of its own, but obtains its apparent glow from the sun. This means that moonbeams actually start their lives as sunbeams, but acquire an additional flavor of power from the mysterious nature of the moon and its mistress, Selene.   The source of power and illumination for the Sun-Chariot of Helios is, ultimately, skins from the golden apples grown in the Garden of the Hesperides. As the Moon-Chariot of Selene passes her brother's vehicle in the sky, she borrows the light for the next cycle of her own vehicle.   Using a golden apple would be a much more concentrated source of power, but those are exceedingly hard to come by and are guarded by a dragon. Drawing power from the Sun-Chariot would be a less concentrated source, but still greater than that of the moon, and the experience of Phaeton shows how dangerous it can be to draw down the sun.   The light of the moon holds less power than an apple or the sun, but causes no damage when drawn down and isn't guarded. In fact, Selene, as driver of the Moon-Chariot, is often cooperative with Hecate's clan.

The Ritual

Drawing down the moon requires three Hecatites who have been bound together in a coven. The ritual is a closely guarded secret. It can be performed at any time during the moon's monthly cycle, but moonbeams from a full or new moon have special powers that make the especially desired. The moon taken from high in the sky has different qualities from a moon taken from close to the horizon.

Uses of Moonbeams

Moonbeams are an important component to many spells, and are often combined with herbs to make potions.   A full moon taken from the horizon when it's just the right shade of golden yellow-orange can be used to make a delicious cheesecake.
