Kennitha Aurenthin

Matron Kennitha Aurenthin

Matron Kennitha Aurenthin

(Ken’-ih-thah Aw-ren'-thin), , Davrin Elf born of the Twenty-Fourth House of Sivaraus.

Kennitha is the Matron of House Aurenthin, the lowest-standing Nobles in the city. She has never been to Court to stand before the Valsharess, being neither summoned nor able to afford the four-cycle one-way trip to the Palace. Even if she were, Kennitha would be reluctant to leave her family without their central figure leader and best mundane healer.

None of her family, either direct or distant relations, have any mage potential, their land is “undesirable” with few natural resources, and few Matrons care to make direct alliances with Aurenthin. From obtaining basic necessities to defending their lives and land, the Aurenthins have only each other to rely upon.

Background

Kennitha was born as the Second Daughter to Matron Chessika, becoming the First Daughter and heir when the eldest sister was killed in a Fringe conflict. Kennitha also had two brothers, the eldest confirmed killed by a Tragar and the other gone missing during a trading trip. None of these misfortunes are believed to be from betrayal or in-fighting, an unusual stance among Davrin Noble Houses.

As the sole survivor of her Mother’s children, Kennitha is determined to do all in her power to strengthen their family as far as possible. House Aurenthin is known to lose the highest number of Nobles per generation; to provide resiliency to unpredictable and sometimes devastating losses, the Matron Aurenthin and any sisters of her generation are encouraged to bear children as close together as she can manage.

Current

Matron Kennitha has done her late mother proud by bearing six children before turning three hundred. Even more impressive, the dense cluster of siblings are all still among the living. While Kennitha tolerates a modest amount of “normal” bickering between them, she forbids outright competitiveness within their House. Her goal in raising them continues the “low” tradition of not further weakening their position with in-fighting over the dregs of their society. Instead, the Aurenthins know they must work together with their relatively young Matron in charge.

Kennitha feels a draw to be a knowledgeable healer despite her inherited political status. With no mages born to their House in six generations, and with only “base” healing methods and knowledge from the Fringe and the Army being passed down, the current Matron has taken great interest in memorizing, practicing, and experimenting the best ways to aid the residents of her House and surrounding lands when injured or ill.

With sparse archives to draw on and the expense of obtaining writing supplies, Kennitha writes down the recipes for tested-and-proven salves and tonics, as well as the best practices for setting broken bones, dressing wounds, and tending illness, but she keeps these hidden and does not speak of them. She carries a great deal more knowledge in her head which is passed on to any Aurenthin who will learn from her, be they servant, commoner, or Noble.

Kennitha’s reputation includes a willingness to bargain for her healing services with the Fringe, and this has no doubt helped provide for her lands, getting them enough to eat and gaining strength to train for their territory’s defenses. No Matron of House Aurenthin has ever had it easy, but the second-born of Matron Chessika has taken this as a challenge for her lifetime, however long it may be; she has chosen neither to despair nor hope for better, despite the lasting resentment their entire House has toward the Valsharess, Her Priestesses of Braqth, and Sivaraus as a whole.

Her works bore unexpected fruit beyond her many children when the Elder General Rausery arrived in secret. The Elder quickly confirmed that she’d always been watching them, her mother and grandmother before her. This neither surprised nor impressed Kennitha.

“I need some regular reports about the Fringe,” Rausery said. “Your Matrons before you have helped the Sisterhood in small ways for tools, weapons, food, whatever you need that won’t draw Palace attention. Will you bargain with me as well, Matron?”

  “On one condition,” Kennitha replied.
The powerful Red Sister smiled. “And what is that?”
“If it ever seems the Sanctuary is coming for one of my caits, I ask the Sisterhood take notice as well. Perhaps claim her first.”
Rausery squinted, tilting her head. “Our trials could kill her outright if she wasn’t prepared.”
“Understood. A quick death is better than whatever has happened to our other kin in among the Priestesses.”
Kennitha felt no comfort when the Elder General nodded in agreement.
“Alright. Your condition is granted, Matron.”
“Then let us bargain for your eyes on the Fringe, General.”
