A priest discovered the book while purifying an abandoned laboratory after the Meiji Restoration. He read it cover to cover, wrote about the gruesome discovery in a note to his superior, and burned the book.
He died of what is said to be an infected fox bite shortly after. The author's whereabouts are unknown.
