Heinrik of Retervaal

Guardian on the Wall

Don't worry, they're just sending us to guard the wall for a few weeks. Apparently, they are running low on manpower we just happen to be conveniently close by.
— Heinrik of Retervaal
Heinrik is a militiaman from the small village of Retervaal. He is currently serving on Olok's Wall, the great fortified line that protects the Kingdom of Enlitica from eastern aggressors. Heinrik comes from a family of Rustilian peasants who immigrated to their new homeland a few years before his birth. Fiercely loyal, protective, and passionate about Enlitica and all that it stands for, Heinrik signed up with a local militia group at a young age.

Rustic Roots

Orange Pumpkin by Jessica Lewis
Heinrik of Retervaal was born to a family of Rustilian immigrants who had grown tired of the dull cliffs of their homeland. In 1545 AA, his parents Valdemar and Katlin, together with his older sister Svea, boarded a ship and sailed east. Upon their arrival in the Kingdom of Enlitica, the government directed them towards the village of Retervaal. There they were able to move into a rundown farmhouse.   By the time that Heinrik was born, his parents had managed to renovate the house and they had negotiated a deal with the nearby garrison on Olok's Wall. A portion of their harvest would be sold to the soldiers.

Childhood

Heinrik started helping his parents around the farm at a young age. He pushed wheelbarrows, delivered tools, and ran other miscellaneous errands. His father taught him what he claimed were the Enlitic values; liberty, tolerance, and reason. Heinrik would carry those lessons with him and occasionally contemplate about their meanings. As he grew older, he became more quiet and reserved. Afraid of expressing his thoughts and opinions. He feared that telling people, especially his close friends and Grete, the girl he had developed feelings for, would alienate him from them. His family was somewhat more understanding of him, but even they didn't know all that went through his mind.

Crush

For a few years now, Heinrik has been romantically interested in the daughter of the village carpenter, Grete. The two have been good friends since they first met each other.   Heinrik has wanted to express his feelings for her for months but hasn't found the courage to do so. A part of him also fears her father, Magni.

Militiaman

Heinrik joined up with a local militia on a whim at the end of 1547 AA. He figured that it would be a good way to spend his winter. The nearby fortification that defends the eastern border had been undermanned, and the militia was willing to help. All he had was a long knife, but his father gave him his old spear and the militia supplied him with an extra shield and gambeson for protection.
