Salt - NaCl

Salt is the lifeblood of human civilizations. Its use in preservation has been noted throughout history. Strangly, salt is hard to gather and find in the Known World, even on the continent of Karenth Centralis. While salt exists in the oceans it is difficult to harvest the salt from the sea water without destroying large amounts of land dedicated to the process. While there are a few small salt farms around Karenth using the sea as the source. Most of the salt in Karenth Centralis is from Oasis on the Edge.
The need to preserve foods have led several groups in search of veins of salt in various geographic regions, and in every case where there should have been salt, it was always completely removed via mining, apparently thousands of years ago.
Every five to ten years when the Oasis Vines emerge from the ground, they bring with them large deposites of salt around the areas from which they sprout. In addition, the insides of the plants are pounded, dried, and winnowed leaving behind large amounts of salt. This salt is gathered and traded across the continent to Grayton's Lot, Elenoran, Aranol, Morenstople, Carensenth and even Teberent.
The salt produced in Oasis on the Edge is of the highest quality, pure and with good taste. However production is eratic at best due to the emergence of vines only every 5-10 years. It's not uncommon for the salt to run out before the five year mark.
