Morenstople Settlement in Karenth | World Anvil

Morenstople

Like many of the cities occupied by the Displaced, Morenstople is no exception to having built upon the Nethen city left behind. In the case of Morenstople and Carensenth, it was well known that cities existed in both places, but they they were covered with the sands of time, leaving wrecked buildings on the surface in the form of cut stone bricks everywhere, but no habitable structures being visible. The early band that arrived in the area split into two groups, one building Morenstople, and the other Carensenth.   Morenstople is now a thriving trade city with the four members of the Four Cities Treaty and many of the smaller communities and city states in the region. While built in the desert, there is still much lush vegetation around, being transplanted from Carensenth. The harbor within the city was in excellent condition when the Displaced arrived allowing for a good base of navel operations.   Morenstople is also a major producer of glass and glass products for the region. Within the sands of the old Nethen city were found the foundaries and molds necessary to build quality glass. Some of the Displaced that arrived knew about glass blowing and production and the sands of the surrounding dessert are excellent for glass production.   Morenstople also has a growing population of magic users. Several wizards and sorcerors have begun to dig out their own neighborhood from the sands and are utilizing the Nethen buildings instead of building anew. They keep to themselves for the most part, and are left to their own devices by the populace.   In addition the city has a frequent visitor, Trothanawr, a great wyrm blue dragon. The dragon is often lonely for intellectual conversation and will visit the wizards and sorcerors. From time to time he will even bring gifts to the people of the city itself, such as a pile of gold he brought them a few hundred years ago, or the large pillars he brought from far away.

History

Morenstople had the more plentiful supply of building materials, and quickly built the larger of the two towns. They also had the only two ships of the group, as they had dropped off the other group in what is now Carensenth. Carensenth did have the food supply, and soon became an agricultural ward of the city of Morenstople with some autonomy in government in lieu of a tithing of food every year. A trade between food and building materials started with the remaining two ships, and the owners of the two ships were soon becoming wealthy.   It is part of the Four Cities Treaty between Aranol, Morenstople, Carensenth, and Forenthal. The four cities make up one of the 3 major powers in the world. The first and weakest of the three is Rora, the second is the Order of Eight and the cities which it has influence over, and the third is the Artifact Agreement and the areas over which it controls. However, the Artifact Agreement has a fair bit of influence over the Four Cities, but it is a subtle influence, and only a few know of the real power behind the influence.

Demographics

The city is made up primarily of humans, some dwarves, and a number of halflings that work in the shipyards. In addition, several hill and stone giants live near the docks helping the halflings.

Government

Morenstople is a monarchy run by the Verith family. Their leadership is lacking, so much of the city is left to manage itself. As such, corruption is rampant and the city guard often has to intervene to keep things running.

Defences

The city guard consists of about 200 poorly trained soldiers and 10 well trained guards.

Infrastructure

The city has fresh water access due to a number of wells that were found and uncovered in the city. Sanitation is lacking and often thrown in the streets. Like many of the cities in Karenth, the market can be found near the docks.
