Gerasimus Essex

Gerasimus Essex

Gerasimus Essex was a professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in the 18th century.    A diligent and stern man, he could be very severe, and never liked anything that couldn't be boiled down to numbers. In his youth, he was a sailor, but he preferred the mathematics attached to working out one's position on a map to the physical act of dealing with ropes and sails.
