Horrors of the Silver Moon
End Times Prophecy
If it has happened once, it can easily happen again. These words are a haunting mantra that repeats in the back of the mind, chilling the veins when one thinks about what has happened in this world, what horrors were once unleashed on its surface. It so easily happened the first time, a set of words etched in parchment drawing the susceptible to make harrowing choices, to choose power, and enlightenment over a world continuing to exist. If one wayward soul was tempted, what is to say that another might not as well?
After the Horrific Lords entered the world and started to make it their own, there was little more needed to prophetize the end of the world. It would be beneath the silver moon, full and bright at its zenith, highlighting the nightmares that rose from portals hidden by the landscape. This time, there were no heroes to stop the nightmares. This time, there was no one left to stem the flow long enough for magic to work. With horrors beyond the imagination roaming the land, it would only take the blink of an eye for the world to be erased, removed from all living memory, and cast aside as nothing more.
The desolation that happened had only been a moment in the history of the world, but for those living through the nightmare, living through actual hell, those hundred years were the slow march to an inevitable end. That someone saw that such devastation could happen again and wrote such a prophecy is not surprising. The beginning of the end came beneath a silver moon, figures shrouded in shadows as they rose, so why could the end also not come beneath the same moon years later, a marker of the cycle being completed?
Historical Basis
Of all the myths in the world, the Horrors of the Silver Moon is one of the most believable as so many people in the world have almost lived the myth and prophecy. The Eldritch War is not an event taken lightly, even more than two centuries after its conclusion. Laws have been put in place to hinder those from causing such an event to happen again, but it is something that still lives in the back of people’s minds as a possibility that is not that far off.
Terrifying. Hopefully it never comes to pass.
