Khath'im

I have always thought that Khath'im was proof of why witchcraft laws are a hopeless idea. Anyone who could fairly be found guilty under such laws would be readily able to render moot any attempt to prosecute them.

Lord Henry Tufton, Director-General

Khath'im is a student of the arcane arts. Indeed, some call him the most practiced arcanist of the modern era. Like most of those who are true masters, he appears to spend most of his time and efforts on perfecting the craft, rather than on more practical affairs.

History

All evidence points to Khath'im being born an Englishman, almost certainly under a different name. He antedates the founding of the Service and is referenced in some of the earliest records. The Archivist Anne Becker-Hart uncovered evidence that a meeting between King James I and Khath'im may have convinced the king that most of the witch trials underway were actually false accusations.   When approached more recently about working with the Service, Khath'im replied, "I served one queen well enough and that is sufficient for any man." While there is speculation about whether this might refer to Mary II or Anne, there are some who argue that Khath'im may actually have been Sir Adam Everingham, 3rd Baron Everingham. Everingham was one of Elizabeth's favorite courtiers and served as her personal envoy to the Ottoman Empire for many years before disappearing under mysterious circumstances in 1595.   Becker-Hart was able to trace Khath'im's travels across Asia throughout the seventeenth century. This is when he adopted his unusual garb, which may have been a way to disguise his appearance. Although the record is scarce, it seems that he spent most of the eighteenth century in the Americas. He was definitely reported to be in the colonies during the revolution. Soon after that, he returned to England, although the period of Napoleon Bonapartes's wars found him on the continent on several occasions. Since then, he has resided in England, as much as he could be said to reside anywhere.

Notes

Khath'im is an adherent of the Code of Cosmic Balance. Virtually any action that he takes, whether mundane or arcane, is done according to the strictest possible accounting. Service members who seek information or assistance from Khath'im should be aware that he will expect something in return of equal value. The question of what represents equal value in terms of Cosmic Balance can be surprisingly complex.   Khath'im rarely physically interacts with individuals or objects. In most instances, the girl deals with such matters.
