Husky Caravans

Keep up...

Huskies, as most people know them, are large wagon trains that form in any part of the world with the goal of traversing the dangerous and unknown territories in search of a better life. The husky caravans are multicultural attempts at immigration. Criminals, exiles, nomads, and those who just wish for a better life all seek out the huskies to leave their home in search for another. Most of them never make it. The name comes from their size and the gruff appearance of the wagons used.

A Difficult Journey

The caravans know the world is dangerous. They know that time changes as you travel. Some caravans have seen generations come and go during their travels, filled with men and women who were born on the road and have no nation to call home. The caravans often end up being the only home they have. Many choose to stay rather than abandon all that they know when they reach their destination. What surprises most newcomers are the Universal Maladies that plague the world. Their are many still being discovered, even veterans find themselves unprepared for the horrors that wait in the wild.
On top of the environmental hazard, travelers must come face to face with creatures unknown to the world. Any encounter could be the last the caravan will face before being killed off.

Joining the Caravan

Those who seek to join could wait a considerable amount of time before a husky comes along. They could wait much longer if they are waiting for a specific caravan of note. There are numerous caravans that are known for their success. Some are just put together better then others and have significantly better access to resources. These Caravans usually travel the same route back and forth never venturing off of the path that they know. when you find one you wished join the process of doing so is fairly easy.

you must approach the Taskmaster of the Caravan and list off the various assets and talents you can provide in exchange for passage in numbers and mutally assured safety. By sharing provisions and talents, all can prosper while on the road. If you are deemed useful, your in. If you are not, you are not turned away. You're still welcome to join but will not dine, nor receive aid from the caravan.

This is a dangerous position as those who are not officially part of the caravan or those who cannot pull their weight will be used as bait or simply left behind entirely.

Off the Wagon

It's important to remember that a caravan doesn't explore. They travel. They do not walk at a steady pace, they run. The fewer moments of rest taken the better. Many have met their end by being abandoned simply because they took a break for too long or moved too slow.

Wardens

Wardens make a profitable living when traveling with these caravans. It is thought that the wardens were the first to set up the caravans in the first place. Wardens trade their expirience and knowledge for well earned coin, and a good warden can mean the difference between success and brutal, agonizing failure.

The safest way to travel

Most of the hazards one will meet along the way are easily thwarted due to the numbers of the caravan. It is for this reason that its considered the safest option for travel. Most would never travel at all. There is desperation involved with huskies. Most trips are one way, and those who take them never look back. Taking this trip means leaving everything you know. You leave your family, friends, and home, and whether you survive or not, its often assumed you died.

Famous Huskies

Below lists the most well known huskies. These are almost always successful, though the stories of success never include a body count.
  • The Trans-Cordaisian Caravan: The Trans-Cordais is considered the most dangerous of all the caravans due to the fact that the caravan plots a course directly on the border of Dis, a unforgiving desert, and The Black March , and equally unforgiving region of forests and swamps. Despite the perils of monsterous creatures and Universal Melancholia, it is the most direct way to get to The Freeholds, particularly The Freehold of Cordais. This is the same caravan used by House Gray when they were exiled from Cordais.
  • The Aelusian Caravan: The Aelusian Caravan cuts across the desert of Dis to reach Aelusia, a colony of Estoya. It's the smallest of the famous caravans and seems to get smaller each year.
  • The Estoyan-Mhirrian caravan: The third caravan of note, The Estoyan-Mhirrian Caravan is the slowly losing its purpose. The caravan follows the roads out of Estoya and into The Provinces of Mhirriah. Since The Estoyan Pathfinders have stabilized the border and Universal Vertigo, the journey is much safer than it was before. Regardless, many fear criminals and Weir Beasts and still use the caravan. The frequent travels between the two nations is all that keeps the caravan running.

This has to be my favorite take on the husky prompt. I enjoyed every part of it. Something I was wondering about though is if new huskies are sometimes formed, and how would that be done. Who starts a new husky and when is it deemed ready to travel? Like how many people would one need and how many wagons.

That's a really good question. Usually huskies don't care how many they have, it's how few they have that really matters. Less than 100 people and maybe 13 wagons is a no go, and they postpone departure. If they meet that quota, they leave on a scheduled date. New huskies are formed but usually don't make it. Either too small, unprepared, or inexperienced and if they do make it, they usually disband since they formed for a one way trip anyway.   Thanks so much I hadn't considered that and I'm always happy to hear you enjoyed it, especially that may be a favorite! Thanks so much!
