Bardic Seals Item in Expedition Demeter | World Anvil

Bardic Seals

Each Bardic College possesses a seal that represents and affirms membership to the organization. Every member keeps this seal on their person at all times. The seal usually depicts a symbol that represents the college. A bard can possess many seals depending on how many colleges they are members of. These seals are not only used to identify one another but are also used as badges of honor, and a means of proving one's status as a bard. Each seal is unique in its own way, some used for more than just a cosmetic identification. Each seal will possess the name of the bard who owns it and finding one can lead to rewards if it's returned.

Particularly famous bards often have their own seals. These seals could depict the profile of their face or possibly their house crest. Symbols associated with the bard in question can also be used. Personal seals are the only foolproof way of determining if the bard you are talking to is who they say they are. Few bards have them, as it requires considerable fame and fortune to not only produce one, but also have it easily recognizable by others.

Uses

A bardic seal has more utility for the bard who owns it. A bardic seal is required to enter the respective college's vault. It is also a ticket into the college itself in most situations. It can be used to build trust in others and to avoid certain confrontations if the situation allows for it. You'd be surprised how many bards can leave a situation unscathed simply because there would be enemy didn't want to bring harm to a bard they enjoy the works of.

Types of bardic seals

  • A coin
  • A pin that can be worn on clothing
  • A spell that can be cast as discreetly as one wishes that will display the seal.
  • A pendant, ring or other form of jewelry.
  • A scarf or sash that is tossed over the shoulder draping down across the chest, can be used to display many seals.
  • A totem or something similar to a keychain that can be attached to clothing, packs, or satchels.
  • A high-quality garment, such as a specific kind of head wear
  • Tattoos made with a specific kind of ink
  • Ceremonial items such as a dagger, small instrument, or an ornate quill for writing.
  • Decorations on a weapon such as a signet or a cloth with the seal at the end that is wrapped around the handle.

Uses

  • Sometimes just showing a university seal will allow you free drinks in a tavern and the owners trust to be able to give information regarding rumors. This exchange is offered only if the bard works the tavern for at least an hour or two.
  • Some seals can be shown to individuals who are in a trade that has similarities to the college that seal belongs to. A prime example would be The College of The Forge. Showing the seal of the College of the Forge to any kind of smith can immediately build trust.
  • As previously stated seals can easily be used to avoid confrontations if you are particularly famous bard.
  • In certain parts of the world, having a bardic seal can build trust with locals if you find yourself an outsider, there are other territories we're having a seal can actually be a downside depending on their history with bards.

This is not exhaustive, but lists a few ideas I've been thinking over.

This is such a beautiful idea, I hope you won't mind if I use it on my current campaign. I play an all-bards party (4 bards) and this will fit perfectly - Can I please use it if I refer back to this article?
