The Denanden Pit

A coal mine

This article is a stub. Please comment if you would like it to become a priority for expansion.
The Denanden Pit is a coal mine located in the hills of northern Dryst, just outside the town of Denanden. It is one of the oldest still active coal mines in the country, having been in operation for over half a century, and it produces several thousand tonnes of coal a year. It is currently estimated that the mine's coal reserves may be exhausted within the next five years, which could eventually lead to the death of the town.   The poisonous runoff from the mine has polluted the nearby Telly River, leading to the destruction of the delicate ecosystem of the wetlands surrounding the river's tidal estuary.

Are there any merfolk associated with the river who are impacted?

That's a good question. Probably! :(

Are we too early for ecologists in your world to study the river impact?

Yeah, no one really cares about the river :( In other countries, perhaps they would.

It's interesting that Denanden might be doomed once the mines are exhausted. As a resident of a town where coal was mined, I can say that doesn't have to happen. But of course, here no river was polluted, destroying an entire ecosystem. That makes me sad.

I suppose it depends on the people and the environment. I plan to do a lot of research on the subject, especially as my wife's family has a long history with coal mining. The pollution makes me sad too. :(
