The Throat winds through the mountains of the Teeth, providing a slightly less dangerous way to cross between the borders of Kaien and Serukis. On the Kaienese side of the mountains sits the fortress of Everhold, intimidatingly tall and dark against the pale snow of the pass.
Everhold consists of two large curved walls that stretch across the width of the Throat, flanked either side by rough, steep cliffs. Each stone wall is about three metres thick and contains a large gate that is kept closed the majority of the time, except to let approved people pass through. Located within the walls are barracks and other living spaces.
Between the two walls is a large courtyard where people must wait to be vetted before crossing the border into Kaien. There are covered spaces and fires kept lit, and sometimes food is provided if people are polite. It is less strict the other way, with only warnings uttered before people are allowed into the Throat.
The fortress of Everhold is supplied by the village of Stillcross, just a mile away from the fortress itself.
