Dappled Vutter

Misunderstood

The dappled vutter, also known as a shriekspider, is native to the Black Forest in southern Serukis. They are not actually spiders, but a small mammal that has evolved eight limbs. Each limb is tipped with long grasping fingers that allow the vutter to move with unsettling ease through the dense forest canopy.   A social species, they live in family colonies of between ten and twenty, with mature male offspring breaking off to live in bachelor colonies before finding a family group. They communicate with loud shrill calls, which are sometimes mistaken for screams. Despite their appearance, they are curious creatures who often try to make friends or share food with travellers; it usually doesn't go well.   It is believed by the Koushan Mai that all vutters are the children of Isor, a dangerous half-spider man from their mythology. They have a belief in carrying applesin order to traverse the forest safely, which is probably why vutters see people as a source of food.

How big are these things? They sound like they would be such a curious blend of horrifying and cute!

I kind of picture them as about the size of a house cat. I love them.

What are they? Vegetarians or carnivores, if they consider peoples as food because of their apples? Considering they're cat-sized, it would be interesting to know how they hunt so that peoples can even serve as a food source.

They don't eat people, but they associate people with food - so they will always approach in the hopes humans will share snacks. Like with ducks in parks that get fed bread.   They eat plants and insects. :)
