Botanicals: Mythic Botanica (buh · ta · nuh · klz / mi · thik bow · ta · nee · kuh)
Classification
Mythic Botanica are not so much “plants” as they are living expressions of the world’s imagination—floral beings whose forms transcend what many would call natural, yet who exist just as fully, rooted in soil, nourished by light, and fully at home in the ecosystems of Tir na nÓg. They are radiant participants in the greater life-web, not because of their rarity, but because of the poetry they carry in their being.
Some glow softly in moonlight, revealing forgotten paths. Others change color when truths are spoken nearby. There are blossoms that mirror dreams, or trees whose branches hum when cradling grief. These are not flourishes of enchantment—they are adaptations of meaning. Mythic Botanica arise where the boundaries between thought and growth dissolve. They do not exist to astonish, but to remind: that the world is as alive in wonder as it is in roots.
Their presence is often localized and intimate. A grove may appear only in the presence of a particular melody. A flower may bloom only once, and only for one person, its purpose fulfilled in a single moment of recognition. But equally, some Mythic Botanica live long and openly, embedded in community, sharing their subtleties across generations. They may offer scent that calms storms of the heart, or fruit that carries dreams from one sleeper to another. Their gifts are not transactional. They are offerings—freely given, sometimes without reason, sometimes simply because the moment called for beauty.
Though not all can perceive their subtler effects, no being in Tir na nÓg denies their sentience. Many are mobile, or semi-conscious, or commune in ways only partially understood. Some choose to root near people, others remain solitary. And some are known to move, subtly and slowly, like thoughts deciding to stay a little longer. When asked why, those who’ve lived near them often say, “They chose us.” In this land, that is answer enough.
The study of Mythic Botanica is more akin to companionship than classification. No taxonomy holds them long. They defy neat diagrams. Instead, they ask to be witnessed. They ask to be met with presence. And in doing so, they offer a kind of truth: that magic, when it is rooted in care, becomes indistinguishable from life itself.
