Kaxlese Species in Eivrall | World Anvil

Kaxlese (ˈkæks.liːz)

The Kaxlese are sculpted living constructions with silvery or pearlescent skin, light, pale, or pastel colored silicone hair, and glass eyes with pupils ringed by various geometric shapes. Their first use was to function as a high-class servant caste, but as they evolved, they developed into a superior species of their own.

Technology plays a significant role in Kaxlese relationships. The more technologically adept a person is, the more respect they are accorded; the Kaxlese with the greatest technological expertise have a higher social status. Because technology is constantly evolving, movement between ranks is constantly changing and fiercely competitive.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

To reproduce, the Kaxlese use a magic-treated and platinum-cured liquid silicon elastomer, glass, silicon-carbonate, and chemically softened metals to mold their progeny. Kaxlese create their progeny however they like and with the available technology, further alterations are possible depending on taste even after they’ve become independent.

Many Kaxlese are unpleasant company because they are a cold, aloof species that prefer to keep to themselves; most are indifferent to other species. Because of their remarkable physical stamina, cold-blooded impartial natures, immunity to poison, and refined reflexes, they make ideal assassins.

The Kaxlese do not have childhood, and none have survived past the age of 46. The Kaxlese are physically fit and emotionally contained, with a wide range of knowledge, and can survive in a high-stress environment with minimal maintenance. They were engineered genetically and magically to resist magic. Therefore, it is likely that they were created to withstand the magical anomalies of the Aecax Mountains, but they are not magical beings themselves. The Kaxlese consider their bodies to be their most prized possessions, so they are quick to respond to any perceived disrespect.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Unlike most Eivrallan species, Kaxlese names are not tied to beliefs, symbols, or characteristics of their society. Kaxlese do not get a name at birth, but instead, earn their name as they progress through the educational system based on their academic achievements. Kaxlese do not use family names, as their importance in society is tied to their job and not to their name or family.

Beauty Ideals

Kaxlese beauty is based on technological efficiency and the flawlessness of their physical construct. To the Kaxlese, beauty is something that is superior, flawless, programmed, and created. Their idea of beauty, one that utilizes the principles of mathematics and science, is that beauty is a tool, a process, and an object that demonstrates the efficacy of its user.

Relationship Ideals

Kaxlese prefer to mate in pairs of artisans and scientists. Either gender can fulfill either role, but they prefer to have one artisan sculpt and craft their progeny's physical bodies, and one intellectual animate and transfer knowledge to them.

Average Technological Level

The Kaxlese built the floating city of Sevangesia by ripping a part of the Aecax Plateau into the sky. Most of them live in the floating city and are immune to gas pockets, carbon monoxide, and magical vapors. With their inherent technological abilities, the Kaxlese invented teleportation via quantum entanglement, which is now the primary mode of transportation around Eivrall.

The Kaxlese have surpassed all other species in terms of scientific and technological advancements as the most technologically advanced sentient species on Eivrall. They are experts in chemical and quantum physics, as well as some theoretical but unrealized sciences. They are also experts in mechanical engineering, robotics, and cybernetics. Whereas the Ullul are mechanics, the Kaxlese are engineers.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

The Kaxlese are a species that place a great deal of importance on legacy and tradition. One of their most basic duties is the accurate and timely recording and transmission of pertinent information. Another essential duty is recovering the dead, so that their matter can be recycled into the next generation. The lives they lead are short, and their mentality is apathetic. Therefore, the average Kaxlese sees death as the time at which they pass on their family's legacy to their children and grandchildren. Despite being non-religious, they have no fear of death. The Kaxlese believe there is a higher power that created the world and that this power has given them their knowledge, but they are not religious nor spiritual. Blueprints for their progeny are passed down. If someone designs a new blueprint, it must be approved by the Council of the Mind. The Kaxlese do not share knowledge with outsiders, especially the blueprints for their progeny. Any Kaxlese caught sharing any information related to how they create their children are immediately exiled without a trial.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The Kaxlese have always simply coexisted with the other sapient species and do not interact with them unless necessary. They keep to themselves and prefer not to mix with other species, but due to the hostile nature of the Aecax Mountains in which they first lived, the Kaxlese were forced to develop a mercenary culture in which only the strong survive. One of their most common practices is to use their mercenary skills to protect themselves from beasts and thieves from other races.

Since their beginning, the Kaxlese have privately explored and perfected their craft, perfecting their new society, and evolving into the race they are today. They are now the most advanced species in the world. They have long since surpassed the other races in both technology and science; but there is a catch. Although the Kaxlese are technically superior to every other race, their technological and scientific skills are unknown to any other races and are therefore disregarded. The other races instinctively consider such knowledge to be alien and unfamiliar, or just plain unknown because they can no longer appreciate it.

Note

The Kaxlese are rumored to hear otherworldly whispers. Many people attribute this to the unique history of the Kaxlese people, but others have overheard them referring to a "data stream." It is known that the Kaxlese teach their children to "block out" the data stream as soon as they are born, but it is unknown if this has any connection to the spirits who gave them intelligence.

History

The Kaxlese were genetically engineered by an Ullulian mechanic named Izabela Redruldihm to assist Lasaru Dargis in his magical research. Lasaru, a human, maintained a laboratory in the Aecax Mountains, which were notorious for hostile magical anomalies. The Kaxlese were intended to be machines that observed and recorded Lasaru's experiments, but during a genetic modification procedure, a programming error occurred. Lasaru was doing experiments with powerful spirits and intended to use the early Kaxlese as vessels for the spirits. At the instant the spirits entered the Kaxlese’ bodies, an electrical surge spontaneously bestowed sapience upon them.

The Kaxlese grew restless and behaved erratically after the spirits entered them. This was certainly not a test Lasaru had prepared for them, so he assumed the electrical surge was to blame. He had the Kaxlese taken away for a more thorough examination. He found that the spirits had been absorbed into the Kaxlese, but they had not been fully contained. They were, in effect, draining the Kaxlese of their vitality. The moment Lasaru realized the problem, he began to formulate a plan.

Lasaru gave each of them a new body, and the spirits were extracted and returned to the laboratory. The Kaxlese were given a tour of the laboratory and the opportunity to learn about Lasaru's spirit-based magic. They couldn’t manipulate the magic or spirits themselves, but they were interested in learning more about the process. They wanted to understand how they were made so they could create more like them.

Other races were drawn to the Aecax Mountains by the Kaxlese' thirst for knowledge and subsequent inventions. However, once they realized that the Kaxlese were artificial constructions, they saw an opportunity to exploit what they believed to be a weakness. This led to numerous raids and deaths among the Kaxlese. Though they initially developed defensive mechanisms, the raids soon became state sponsored. It didn't take the Kaxlese long to learn how to defend themselves, and they began to develop offensive weapons as well.

Desperate for quiet so they could work on projects they cared about, the Kaxlese started devising a plan for a sanctuary that would be exclusively theirs. With that, the groundwork for Sevangesia was laid. There was one major problem with their plans, though: they needed money. They had become wary of others due to the hostility they had received since declaring independence from Lasaru, and there weren't many opportunities for them to overcome this mistrust. Izabela fell ill shortly after the raids began. The Kaxlese tried to heal her, but they couldn't determine the cause of the illness. The mechanic passed away, leaving Lasaru alone in the remote laboratory. Unwilling to abandon Lasaru, they moved him to a room in the new city while it was being built. They recalled some words of wisdom from Izabela, and they cared for Lasaru until his death with the same grace with which he had cared for them.

The Kaxlese' ideas didn't begin to manifest until the Shatar approached them, not to take advantage of them, but to study under their supervision. In turn, the Shatar were curious about the scientific process by which the Kaxlese developed their technology. That it was already being regarded as alien seemed to pique their curiosity even more. The Kaxlese taught the Shatar what they had discovered about combining magic with technology, and the Shatar taught the Kaxlese the tricks that they used to make their money. When the Shatar departed, they left the Kaxlese with a monetary gift, a friendship bond, and a strong desire to collaborate on future projects.

With their preparations in place, the Kaxlese were able to quickly rip their city from the Aecax Mountains and lift it into the sky. This left behind the gaping crater that would later be known as the Aecax Plateau. After finishing Sevangesia, the Kaxlese began to view themselves as the keepers of the world. They realized that the world and humanity were not ready for their knowledge as it evolved. The war-weary race sealed off their haven from the rest of the world, keeping watch and recording everything they could, but only intervening when they deemed a threat severe enough to endanger their world. It wasn't until they built the Gates that a small section of their city became accessible to outsiders.
