Salt Rake

Salt Rakes are Edenian salt harvesters who work the shores of the Sea of Tears to produce sea salt by hand. Using a variety of techniques passed down from ancestors who sought refuge here from the worlds before, Salt Rakes supplement the output of the world’s salt mines with an artisanal product that is in demand from Oz to The Reek and everywhere in between.

In the city of Saltgate, where a neighborhood called the Hex has been built atop the coastal flatlands, the job is dominated by children. Because of their stature, kids are able to rake beneath the stilted platforms of the Hex and gather so-called “white gold” that would otherwise be unreachable.

Description

Though techniques vary, rakes work areas where solar evaporation allows for easy extraction of salt from seawater. In Eden, these areas are almost exclusively found on the Sea of Tears in Wonderland.

In the city of Saltgate, as an example, rakes deploy at low tide to harvest the natural salt pan formed by the coastal flatlands beneath the Hex. The shade provided by the platforms decelerates the evaporation process, making the harvest a bit more challenging than in other shores along the sea, but it also provides a welcome respite from the beating sun. In fact, it’s this ability to work in the shade which is one of the only reasons that city government permits kids to do the job.

Qualifications

The profession is physically demanding, so endurance and a certain degree of strength are required. Other than that, a willingness to work hard and sweat harder are all that’s required.

Career Progression

In Saltgate, kids age out of the profession as they grow taller. Elsewhere, on family farms around the Sea of Tears, many salt rakes are salt rakes for life.

Payment & Reimbursement

Many salt rakes also sell their products of their harvest, or are part of a family which does. As such, they set their own prices and are able to scrape out an honest living from the trade. Even those that choose to sell their harvest to a distributor, as kids in Saltgate often do, are able to earn and earn well.
