Ability Description

For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and the strength of the magic leftover.

 

Detect Magic also lets one view, or at least perceive, Magic Auras. Each source of magic has an aura, whether or not the item or source is in active use or not. Spells like Detect Magic can help find and understand this magic and how powerful it is. The chart below will help decipher what each rating or moniker may mean when described, repeated from the rule page.

  The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt. Magic that is obscured or otherwise unknown requires a skill check to understand (Spellcraft or otherwise vs DC 15 + spell rank x 2 OR Magic Item Power level + Rarity). If the check fails, the aura is read as "Unknown".

↗/Augmented by Level: At 3rd character level, you learn the Tradition(s) for the highest-level effect within range that the spell detects. At 5th character level you also pinpoint the source of the highest-level magic (Like an imprecise sense, you don't learn the exact location, but can narrow down the source to within a 5-foot cube (or the nearest if larger than that)).
