Ethereal Relay is a new an groundbreaking form of message transmission, that is widespread in Mortavia. Over the course of the last few years, it became probably the most important technology within the cities of the continent. The Ethereal Relay consists of multiple magical towers, that are scattered across the continent, that are connected to each other. Each tower can send messages to the Ethereal Network, or receive them from it. This makes fast, reliable communication possible, even between places that are far away from each other.
Runes of Message Transmission
Each tower is engraved with a set of magical, red glowing runes that establishes the connection to the Ethereal Network. Another device, the Etheral Plate, is responsible to translate a specific message into arcane energy, that is then sent to the Network. The responder will then translate these messages back to a normal, readable script. This new technology allows for a fast transmission of important news and messages over the whole continent.
The Ethereal Relay is used by various organizations and institutions all over Mortavia, including the governments, commercial corporations, mage guilds, and military establishments. Ethereal Fallout
In addition to the numerous supporters of the network, there are also critics who warn of the leakage of magical energies - but above all of the effects that this could have. Above all, they fear that the network could lead to an increased number of magically gifted children, which could damage the status and prestige of already established magicians. There are also warnings about magically caused natural disasters, angry spirits and a "drying out" of the magic of the world. However, the longer the network operates without any of these warnings coming true, the more apocalyptic the prophecies become.
Recently, there have been warnings that the towers' magical emanations and their operation by non-magical members of society could cause them to lose their minds and develop all sorts of nasty magical diseases. Instead of abolishing the network, it should be placed under the complete control of the magic academies.
