Cemarros Storms

The western coast of {nation/landmass} is sparsely inhabited. This is due to powerful creatures, large swathes of wilderness, and no seeming signs of prior civilizations. Though in truth, the predominant reason is the powerful Cemarros storms.   These storms are very severe, and occur periodically throughout the 7-month wet season. Rain, hail, and violent winds are common trademarks, but the storms also encourage dangerous creatures to leave their territories - either seeking refuge from the tempests or because of the strange magical energy that accompany them. These "monsters" cause havoc in their own right, as they migrate inland seeking refuge or prey.   It is rumored that the reason these storms are infused with energy is due to a powerful unknown artifact that was swallowed by the sea long ago. Some believe that it is not an artifact, but a powerful mythical creature stirring itself. Scholars are quick to point out that there is no evidence of any such creature, nor of any civilization located within the region.   Despite the lush appearance of the jungles and forests that populate the {location, coast} region, the storms often carve large paths of devastation - to the extent that the landscape itself is reshaped. This constantly shifting terrain makes mapping impossible.   The storms lose the vast majority of their strength as they continue inland, with only the final vestiges finally reaching inhabited lands. At this point, while the wind and precipitation are still intense, it is the displaced creatures that pose the most dangerous risks to villages and outposts.   Rural locations on the edge of the region often work together to generate enough resources to hire versan - a name for hunters, rangers, and mercenaries whose role is to either kill or remove the most dangerous and destructive of predators.
