Colour-Changing Silk

Colour-changing silk is a fabric that has been magically altered to change colour under certain conditions. The magic in the fabric lasts for different lengths of time, which makes the price of such garments vary greatly.

Dame Summers' atelier is hidden in a side street of the Market. When I went to her for the first time, I thought I was lost. The buildings in the area are too old and not as magnificent as I am used to from home. But this impression was deceptive, because when I stood in front of the shop window, I saw what I had come for.

Dozens of dresses were presented there, from simple everyday clothes to elaborate robes decorated with precious stones. The masterpiece, however, was a dress that had been made for a count's fiancée and exhibited there before the evening ball. Made of black silk at first sight, it changed colour before my eyes until it was covered with hundreds of blood-red roses that entwined each other.

Overview

Creation

The basis for the colour-changing silk is a fine, flawless silk fabric, which usually has to be imported from Ruabrim and is accordingly expensive. This fabric is first dyed in the traditional way to obtain the basis for the desired garment. The basic colour is determined in this way.

The fabric is then reinforced with various spells that improve its durability, make the silk crease-resistant and dirt-repellent. This is followed by the spells that determine the later pattern, gradient or other colour-changing properties. These vary according to the complexity of the desired change. This ranges from a colour gradient when the fabric warms up to motifs and images that only appear at a certain time.

Durability

The durability of the fabric depends massively on the quality of the raw silk and the strength of the spells with which it has been reinforced. The simplest fabrics of this kind lose their effect after a year and a day, while the most expensive and refined versions can last up to a century.

Additional protective spells make the fabric more durable and ensure that there are no accidental holes in the finished garment that would reduce its value. Basically, however, the better the quality of the spells and the more elaborate the silk is, the longer it lasts - and the more expensive it is.
