The Mundbyrdians Military Formation in Wynsumheord | World Anvil

The Mundbyrdians

The Mundbyrdians of Wynsumheord is the organization co-founded by Havardir (father of Magnar and Syndri) along with a few others who decided to band together and start their own clan of protection.   Long ago, when many peasants felt they were tired of living under the law of corrupt rulers, they began to migrate to unoccupied land to camp. Eventually, they set up colonies and organized settlements. This vast land came to be called Wynsumheord, and, when they got word of it, the four surrounding kingdoms fought to gain control of it. After many vain attempts, three of the kingdoms agreed to let the people be, but the Wahstrehite king would not give up. That is one of the reasons why the Mundbyrdians were assembled; to protect the land from his constant taunts and tortures. He sends his soldiers to terrorize the villages and he even carries out raids, but as the Mundbyrdians grow, it becomes harder and harder for him to appear as a threat to Wynsumheord. Wynsumheord's warriors were originally unorganized, but the Mundbyrdians (though they aren't the most structured unit) have some sense of control and officiality for each district.   In addition to defending the land from evil rulers, the Mundbyrdians pride themselves on upholding peace and justice. Even though their land has no king, they work to make sure the people are on one accord-- or are at least tolerating each other. They want to prove that their land doesn't need a royal ruler, but they understand the necessity of government to retain order in the world. Each village has its own form of jurisdiction in one way or another, but the Mundbyrdians are the knight system that spans over the entire region. There are branches in each one of the main districts, and the Chief officers meet regularly to discuss happenings and potential troubles.   When things are less threatening, there is still very much for the Mundbyrdians to do. They are men for hire (who like to stay on the righteous side). Whenever someone has a problem, they will enlist their local Mundbyrdian for help. These brave men will do anything from bounty hunting, to stopping a bear from terrorizing a village, to rescuing a damsel in distress to finding a lost necklace. They may even paint your shed.

Composition

Manpower

The Mundbyrdians are too numerous to count. Spreading across several different settlements, it's impossible for any one Chief to know exactly what is happening in another Chief's district until they have their meetings. There are only five official Chiefs as of now. These Chiefs have the ability to do as they please in their district; recruiting men, rejecting them, appointing sub-leaders, organizing mini-clans etc.

Equipment

The Mundbyrdians don't use any set equipment or armor. Each man comes as he is. The individual Chiefs however can establish a uniform utilizing their own funds if they'd like (but that option is rarely chosen for obvious reasons). If a Mundbyrdian is proud of his organization, he may craft a weapon/shield, or modify his own to reflect the Mundbyrdian's crest symbol. In a desperate attempt at gaining at least a little uniformity, Havardir slaved for days forging five almost identical branding stamps to pass out to the other Chiefs in hopes that they may burn the symbol into something of each of their soldiers. One of the Chiefs said that he lost it on the way back to Cloddendale, one said that branding everything was too much work. The other two spoke not of it.

Weaponry

Each Mundbyrdian brings his own weapon to the table. If someone does an extremely awesome job, his Chief may reward him with a brand new weapon, but usually, it is up to each soldier to acquire and maintain their combat gear. They have been known to use anything from daggers to chains to axes to spears to bows and arrows. Even Syndri's unique RodStaff can be added to the roster, but the most commonly utilized weapon is sword and shield.

Vehicles

Most Mundbyrdians ride their own horses or walk on foot. Very rarely will you find a group of Mundbyrdians traveling in a wagon or carriage together, especially when on duty.

Structure

There are only five official Chiefs. Each one presides over his own region. Within these sectors, the Chiefs may delegate certain tasks to different members, but none of this is standard.

Tactics

The crew assembles often and they discuss what might be the best way to go about something. There is no particular method of this. The Mundbyrdians are literally a random group of men who many times spontaneously decide what should be done. They also begin and end each meeting with prayer, opening their hearts for The Shining Lord to reveal the best strategy for the current situation.

Training

These men are not formally trained at all. They have either been recruited or have come to their local Mundbyrdian Chief to volunteer. They spar and practice often, but there is no set discipline or fighting skill required to become one of the clan.

Logistics

Auxilia

At first, the Sundorwick Soldiers didn't know if they could trust the Mundbyrdians. Then, they became neutral about them. After attempts at creating allyship, the Sundorwick were reluctant due to the high opposition from their neighboring tribe; The Firgenholt Woodsmen. They pledged allegiance in secret, but after Magnar and Anselma wed, the joining between Sundorwick and Wynsumheord was publicly known. They are now considered official allies by all in the land, and they have appointed Kyustala as the honorary sixth Chief.

Upkeep

Each man is usually responsible for purchasing or making his own equipment. Sometimes, the Chief may decide to use his own purse, or bounty funds and other such reward money to purchase gear for the crew, but this is not often done. The Mundbyrdians usually get paid by the works that they perform, so, when there is not an imminent threat, it is each man's responsibility to find work for himself. Some hold normal jobs such as farming or smithing, but most chase down bounties or complete quests for reward.

Recruitment

Any person from any walk of life can ask his local Chief if he could be a Mundbyrdian. It is up to the Chief to accept or reject the request. In turn, a Chief can solicit a person he sees fit for the position, but there is no obligatory drafting. The person can easily refuse the offer. There is no set requirement for age, ability, fitness, or skill, but if on a mission a new recruit is costing the team, they may let him go from the clan, or assign him a mentor if they see potential for growth. This is ultimately up to the Chief to decide. No one has specified that women cannot join the clan, but fighting in war is not something that most Wynsumheord women do, therefore they do not enlist, and the Chiefs do not attempt to recruit.
