Far Colony
A "far colony" is one which is established a significant distance beyond the Starweb's nominal frontier. This is usually rare, plenty of habitable planets can already be found in frontier systems without looking even further afield, but sometimes a region devoid of worlds is found (perhaps scoured clean by an ancient supernova), a colony group is looking for a specific site, or perhaps just wants to get far away so they are left alone.
Far colonies were somewhat common during the Second Interstellar Period, and their rediscovery when the Starweb expands out to encompass them is a major source of recontacts with lost worlds. These colonies were established in secret centuries ago, or all records of their existence were lost, and when the Great Patriotic Wars cut off support from back home, many fell into barbarism or died out entirely.
The Stellar Compact has tried to prevent the foundation of secret far colonies, to reduce the chance of sapient-rights abuses in hidden places, by mandating registration of all transit stargates, but even so it is thought some well-funded cult groups and shady corporations have established hidden worlds in remote reaches of the frontier.
