A small town to the south of Lake Kyniere. Camp Phae’lan boasts of the world's largest dye production. Not usually the resource that one would associate with the war plagued region of Valissa, but the dyes that come from Camp Phae’lan are top quality.

Running Phae’lan

The people of Camp Phae’lan are governed by both a ‘Town Baron’ and a ‘Reeve’. The former tends to the administrative matters of the town, whilst the latter tends to legal matters and controls the town guard. Normally, a town in Valissa will have one or the other, but ever since its inception Camp Phae’lan has always had both. This is due to the fact that the town was founded by twins who wanted to share the burden of organising and protecting the town.

Currently the Town Baron position is filled by Adan Enriq. The Reeve position is filled by Jayne De’Coslia. They were voted in by the townspeople after the previous Baron and Reeve met their untimely demise (under suspicious circumstances) in Lake Kyniere.

Standing at the otherside of the cobblestones is a woman. Clad in dark brown leathers, two daggers strapped to her thighs and an axe strapped to her back. From this distance it is difficult to make out her exact expression - you struggle to determine whether that tightly pressed frown is a result of boredom or distrust.

Adan must notice your sudden lack of interest in his tour, because he immediately stops, breathing a drawn out sigh of defeat.

“Who is that?”

He follows your gaze across the way. It elicits a chuckle, bittersweet, and he claps a hand over your shoulder. “Reeve De’Coslia. Don’t mind her though, she’s always wary of strangers. Comes with the job.”

The Perfect Dying Location

Within a day's walk of Camp Phae’lan, there is the Dervont Mountain range to the north west, Lake Kyniere directly north, and the Solstayr Forest to the east. That means the people of Camp Phae’lan have easy access to a variety of natural materials to use to produce dye. From berries and bark to fungi and roots.

The location also means that they are well fortified from any potential attacks, not that the town frequently gets attacked. The most they have to fear is wild animals straying too close to the town borders for comfort but there is always a guard or two on hand to prevent them from actually wandering into town.

Aside from occasional animal attacks, the main concern for the people living in Camp Phae’lan is flooding. During storms or long periods of rain, Lake Kyniere will often overflow, and the area to the south always takes the brunt of this flooding.

Town Map

Camp Phae’lan is split into four districts:

  • Lakeside, to the north of the town
  • Ivycrest, to the east of the town
  • Owl’s Rest, to the south of the town
  • Hollow Walk, to the west of the town

Owl’s Rest is also referred to as ‘the District of Colour’ by its people. This is because most of the dye production happens in Hollow Walk. Being the furthest district away from the lake means that they don’t have to worry as much about the flooding and they have more time to move the products out of the danger zone.

Lakeside and Ivycrest are host to a mixture of shops, general housing, and a couple of guildhalls. Hollow Walk is mainly filled with general housing and taverns to provide a safe haven for travelling merchants and adventurers.

Up until 1338 AL, there were only three districts in Camp Phae’lan. Ivycrest and Lakeside were just Lakeside. Then a particularly bad flood hit the town during the late autumn of 1338 AL - houses and businesses were left in ruin. Perhaps the only things that survived were the dyes over in Owl’s Rest.

For the winter of 1338 / 1339 AL, many were left sheltering in local taverns, waiting for the spring when they could finally set about rebuilding their homes and their lives. So came the divide of Ivycrest and Lakeside, with the former having more general housing (what with people wanting to live as far away as possible from the flooding area) and being named for the ivy that began to grow in the wake of the previous year’s floods.

Camp Phae’lan, like most towns in Valissa, is predominantly made up of humans. Less than 1% of the populace is made up of beastfolk or daelin, despite its close proximity to a couple of daelin Courts. In all likelihood, beastfolk and daelin do not bother to travel to, or stay in, Camp Phae’lan because they have no desire to trade for dyes and other towns / villages in the region favour more essential resources.
