Chapter I: Sky Rocks Report in Oryth | World Anvil

Chapter I: Sky Rocks

Relics of Ochrid

General Summary

As you peer up at the heavens during the dawn skies, you see a purplish hue emerging from the Rybis Rings surrounding Oryth. There is a flicker of light that streaks across the sky; A shooting star. Another streak follows suit, then another. There is a glimmer of light that grows bigger and bigger until you see a meteor from above sore overhead before slamming with a loud cacophonous eruption of sound as it hits the ground nearby. Smoke billows in the distance...

Our story begins on the continent of Ma'kylava in the southernmost region known as Sjaaruchi. The land is in a civil dispute over who claims the right to lay their roots, be it the proud ancestor-worshipping Skjadi people of the old ways or the civilized and well-structured people of law known as the Lyra. High atop the Ma'kylava mountains a Goliath by the name of Zal Seizyakenbu, the Spiritguard meditates under a lush valley between the green peaks. The life around him begins to wither and die, the ground becomes rocky and heated, lava and flames erupt from the ground, splitting the land below. He takes in his surroundings, noticing his vision like state, something he is not unacquainted to. Three ghostly figures lurch toward him. Attempting to send them a prayer from the Four Guardians to allow them to find rest, he soon is surrounded by the angry spirits, being tackled by their flame-alit bodies. Suddenly, the vision fades, and he is back to his meditative spot high on the mountaintops. Looking toward the heavens, he sees pieces of the sky being fall to Oryth with smoke emerging at the foot of the mountain, he gathers his gear and heads on his way.

Somewhere not too far away, a Genasi noble by the name of Juniper Dahl, or Nishi Liu as he is sometimes known, finds himself surrounded by chains suspended over a flowing river of lava. Looking about he attempts to cross the chasm before soon losing his footing. His body is caught by smoke shaped like a hand that whisks him toward a billowing ritualistic formation. Leaping from the hand, he looks to find a bridge. Curiously, he approaches the arcane structure that is naught but a spiral of smoke. Peering toward the smoke, he sees a large red-scaled hand with black claws begin to emerge, before blinking and being somewhere entirely different. Back in the city of Azijuko, he finds himself in a fugue-like state, holding a golden lamp with an impatient merchant who wishes for him to either buy the lamp or leave him be. Lacking the funds to purchase it himself, he has it charged to Liu family directly but forges another family member's name. Looking up at the heavens he sees a blast through the air as the meteors fall to the ground. Gathering his things he takes off toward the suspected adventure that awaits him. Looking back to where the merchant sat, he sees nothing but an empty blanket with no sign of recent use.

On a beached area, a Cervitaur known simply as Adriak communes with his goddess, seeking direction so that he may bring meaning to his life. Opening his eyes, he finds himself afloat in a place void of land as we know it on Oryth. Stars glitter from all directions and landmasses from all around seem to be suspended by nothingness. Using the will of his mind, he is able to move about, finding his way to the central body mass. Landing where gravity exists in a small pocket of reality, he looks about, seeing a stone formation with 9 symbols he is unfamiliar with and an archway with matching runes. Seeing a blast of light emerge from the arch, he is blinded momentarily until he finds himself back on the beach from before. Feeling the ground move, he looks to see several rocks moving into a formation like in his vision, and see specks of dust, feathers, and leaves circle around him in an enchanting fashion. It sores off into the skies where he, too, sees the meteors falling from above. Seeing it as a sign from Sotillion, he ventures forth toward the impact site.

Converging in an area pockmarked with craters with a large crater in the center, the three spots each other for the first time. Hesitant to introductions, they inspect the areas. Inside one of the craters, Zal finds a chunk of Sky Rock, glowing faintly with a blue light. Placing it in his pack, he heads toward the center crater where the others seem to be inspecting a larger glowing chunk themselves. Racing impatiently to the meteorite, June is met with a mist of water that cools off the stone before trying to dislodge the rock unsuccessfully. Boasting his skill, Zal exclaims that he would in turn claim the rock before he is clawed from behind from a disfigured plant-like bark-covered creature with a menacing look. Soon finding themselves surrounded, our adventurers have no choice but to battle the beasts.

Being able to dispatch them with relative ease, they soon find themselves all looking at the chunk of Obinite. Zal and June make quick work of it as they pull the rock from the center. However, something causes it to tear into the fabric of space and reality itself, opening a brilliant portal of prismatic lights as they are shunted into a different plane of existence, the same place Adriak had been just days before.

Inspecting their surroundings, Zal remembers tales of planes between words and determines that they are in a malleable plane of existence known as the Astral Plane. Adriak wills himself to the center platform as he did before, but the others are unable to follow due to their mental limitations and expectations of reality. Adriak summons his mental fortitude and wills a ramp into existence and the others follow him to the center. There, Zal sees a broken stone mural depicting the Secundus, an ancient race of humanoids, receiving the gift of the Words of Power from the gods themselves.

Adriak, finding a crackling source of light that seems to be splintering out like a web torn into the fabric of reality, reaches forward, feeling the presence of the magical source from within. Inspecting it, the three can see the cracks growing larger, and larger until it exponentially splits outward. Before they are able to react, the air explodes forward like shattering glass, blasting them through the portal they came in, Zal being unfortunate enough to crash through the stone structure that held the runes marking the words of power. Coming to and shaking off their wounds, they find themselves back where they were on Oryth, however, surrounding by scaffolding and in the midst of an archaeological dig site. They meet with a Lodi Feperlump of the Starchasers who tell them that the craters impacted two weeks ago. The time they spent on the Astral Plane displaced them from time itself.

Venturing off on their own, they all get acquainted and introduce themselves. After sharing a contest of strengths (which Juniper, the smallest in the group, easily is victorious), they decide that something has called them together this day and agree to travel back to Azijuko to report their findings...
