Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins live for company and war is their life. Glory from their victories is what drives their very souls and failure disgraces them. Beyond all else, fear and cowardice are considered fates worse than death and Hobgoblin would sooner die than back down from a challenge. From a young age, hobgoblins pick up their first weapon and begin fighting for their legion and their cause.

Brutal Civility

In times of peace, hobgoblins only see it as a break in war. They concentrate their efforts on crafting, farming, and their arcane prowess for when the war resumes. It is common for daily feuds and fights out of disagreements or boredom. A common phrase in hobgoblin society is "To die in combat is to live in life".

Rank, Status, & Title

As in any strict military hierarchy, every hobgoblin in a legion has a rank, from the warlord down through a cadre of officers to the soldiers that make up most of its number. These ranks, using the titles most often applied to them, are as follows:
  • 1st rank: Warlord
  • 2nd rank: General
  • 3rd rank: Captain
  • 4th rank: Fatal Axe
  • 5th rank: Spear
  • 6th rank: Fist
  • 7th rank: Soldier

Honor Bound

The people of the hobgoblin culture believe in a code of honor and law. By following this code, they may elevate their rank in their clan. Each of the various clans is unique and have their own laws and guidelines their people are expected to follow, but there are five specific precepts that are present at the heart of nearly all hobgoblin clans:
  • Follow Orders
  • Honor the Gods
  • Suffer Nor Give Insult
  • Reward Glorious Action
  • Uphold the Legion
Though their culture is embedded in combat, their respect for one another is astounding to outsiders. This respect is extended to other races as well. However, if this respect is not reciprocated, it can quickly devolve a relationship into a feud not readily forgiven.

By Glory Crowned

Your glories in combat and spoils of the war are what elevate you in the Legion and one could theoretically rise to the highest of ranks in hobgoblin society by merely claiming the finishing blow or being the one to retrieve a lost relic. As such, many warlords will position themselves in such a way that they have the opportunity to claim that victory and uphold their rank. At any time, one of lower rank may challenge one of immediate higher rank to hand-to-hand combat and elevate themselves to that status.

Implacable Gods

Revering the gods Nomog-Gaeya the stoic, cold-blooded, tyrannical leader, and Bargrivyek, the god of duty, unity, and discipline, the Hobgoblins are expected to uphold these same values in their culture. It is said that these two figures will frequently join in with their loyal worshippers on the battlefield and assist in decimating their foes for the glory of the hobgoblin kind.

Hobgoblin Names

The goblin tongue has many guttural and deep tones, making the names of their culture follow a similar pattern. There is a slight difference between masculine and feminine names, but for the most part, are interchangeable and may apply to any gender.

Given Names

It is traditional among the hobgoblin people to have whoever is the one with the highest rank of the paternal parents to name the child. Often times a challenge will be marked by the lower rank for the sheer right to name their offspring. Hobgoblins will often name their children after a prominent figure in Hobgoblin society of major glory in hope that their spirit will live on.

Amazing. I could almost see a Hobgoblin mercenary company that is so fierce, at some point they'd pay then for NOT showing up at the battlefield as a part of an enemy's army ;)

Oooh, I like the different aspects you focus on. The idea of them being bound by honour is particularly interesting!
