Hextor Character in Oryth | World Anvil

Hextor

Scourge of Battle Hextor (a.k.a. The Herald of Hell)

Physical Description

Body Features

The epitome of sculptured perfect, Hextor appears a six-armed muscular man that towers over his foes with his menacing intensity. He bears no scars and his rippling muscles appear like could take down mountains which, with his divine power, can.

Facial Features

Hextor has a strong chiseled jaw-line and a menacing scowl. He has a brownish beard that hangs from his face and a seemingly shaved head. His eyes are a piercing blue that even the strongest people of will cannot stare into.

Identifying Characteristics

Perhaps his most distinctive characteristic is his six arms all wielding a different weapon of war. He wears very light armor, mostly around his legs and waist, preferring his chest and arms to have a free range of movement.

Personal Characteristics

Accomplishments & Achievements

Hextor's greatest accomplishment to date is overthrowing an entire continent once belonging to his brother and eternal enemy, Heironeous. For more than a millennia, the only legal sanctioned religion has been Hextorian. As such, Hextor has gone from being an intermediate deity to a great one and one of the most exclusively worshipped deities on the face of Oryth. He also takes much pride in that he was able to throw Heironeous into the moon, Rybis, obliterating it.

Failures & Embarrassments

His greatest failure was to experience death at the hands of four mortals that ascended to godhood. He hates any mention of The Ascended and actively seeks to smith any who might be reincarnations of the lost deities.

Taboos

The greatest taboo of Hextor is the opposite of his War Portfolio. Being the prominent god of war in Oryth, he uses its concept to fuel his power and the majority of prayers that collect for his consumption are during times of war specifically on the battlefield. Should war cease to be, it is said, so too would Hextor. This is why devout worshippers of Hextor such as the High Harbinger, Faruko de Ivalon, are weary of Adinimus for agreeing to the Laws of War with the High King of Hroff.

Motivation

Hextor is motivated by two things, battle, and power; Two things Oryth offers in droves and why he has such interest in the Material Plane. Though he resides on Acheron, the plane of endless battle, he aspires to one day rule the Material and turns it into one everlasting battlefield until everyone and everything bends a knee to him. At which point, he will find a champion among them to ascend to his plane and take his throne in his stronghold so he can build his new fort on Oryth.

Divine Qualities

Divine Domains

Those blessed with the divine by Hextor specialize in different domains. The most common among the Clerics are the domains of the Grave, Life, Order, Tempest, and War with War being the most prominent. War Spellbreakers make up the majority of the Harbingers of Tok and widely feared for their terrifying power.

Holy Books & Codes

Dogma

The church of Hextor teaches that the world is a harsh, unforgiving place. The strong rule the weak, and power is the only reward worth having. Cruelty and mercilessness are necessary tools. Order must be forged from Chaos and law from anarchy, but order is meaningless without the will to enforce it. Tyrants are to be obeyed, and dissenters are to be oppressed or killed. Slaves must obey their masters.

Scriptures

  • The Book of Hextor. This is the primary book of Hextor's church, telling of Hextor's youth and his decision to go to the Lords of Evil for boons that would help him against his unworthy brother Heironeous. The book is very old, most copies scribed in Old Oeridian.
  • The Celestial Grindwheel. This is a very heretical set of scrolls written by a Hextorian monk a century ago, hinting that Heironeous and Hextor are actually two halves of the same being. The scrolls suggest that the battle between the two sides helps balance out the good and evil in the multiverse, thereby preventing the destruction of everything.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The typical sigil of Hextor is a spiked black gauntlet holding six arrows. This has evolved into a variety of different symbols over the years. The Hextorian faith has three axe blades surrounding it with Tof'kran script around it with the mantra "Control Ensures Peace..." More simplified versions of the symbol are the basic form of six-arrows representing Hextor's six arms each with a deadly implement at the end of it. An even more basic symbol is depicted on the infamous Pacification Bracer which is just 3 arrows symbolizing the left arms of Hextor and their controlling grasp.

Tenets of Faith

The tenets set forth by the Tok Empire state that blood is life and it is one's duty to sacrifice some of that life to those who seek to protect. During the Blooding, every man, woman, and child must give their lifeblood to their protector in exchange for His defense and tutelage. Strength in combat is revered by those wishing to impress their deity. Also during the Blooding many gather in fighting, pits to see who can shed the most blood in His honor.

Holy Days

The Blooding

The most prominent of rituals and traditions among the Tokian people is a nation-wide celebration known as The Blooding marked by the 8th-14th of Hexbis. The people of Tok are to make a laceration in their left palm and offer their life-force to Hextor. The Blooding is a seven-day celebration where people gather, drink, dance, sing, and (most importantly) fight for their god's favor.

Discovery

Marked by the 12th of Boccbis and the day before the beginning of the Season of Harvest, Discovery is the one day of the year that magic prowess is allowed in the realm of Tok and the day the recruitment for promising Spellbreakers. Should the magic adept fail the Spellbreaker Trials, however, they are sentenced to death to be carried out at midnight with the turning of the Season of Harvest to symbolize the harvesting of their magic.

Day of Curiosities

The Day of Curiosities is marked by the 7th of Trithbis and is the most widely celebrated holiday in all of Oryth and Tok is no exception. It is the one day of the year that in accordance with the Laws of War that no blood shall be shed between the nations of Hroff and Tok. It is customary on this day to give three gifts. The first gift is a handmade gift presented to one's parents, the second, a bought gift for one's closest friend or friends, and the third, a gesture of kindness of no material solidarity to a complete stranger.
