Ostregarde
Ostregarde is a modest village of the Kingdom of Asperia, best known for the massive stone wall that dominates its landscape. Once a vital defensive stronghold protecting the heart of the kingdom from threats beyond, the wall now stands as a relic of a harsher age. Though no longer manned for war, it remains the defining feature of the settlement, housing the village leadership and serving as a logistical center for local storage and administration.
Demographics
Ostregarde maintains a small population composed primarily of humans, with a limited presence of other races. Most residents are local families who have lived in the region for generations, alongside farmers, laborers, and tradesmen supporting the village’s modest economy.
Its people are known for being practical, disciplined, and somewhat conservative, shaped by generations spent living beneath the shadow of the old fortress-wall.
Government
Ostregarde is governed by a local mayor who oversees the village’s day-to-day administration under the authority of the Kingdom of Asperia.
The mayor resides within the old wall’s central tower, which serves both as a residence and administrative hall. Minor disputes, tax matters, and regional concerns are handled locally, while greater legal authority remains with the crown.
Defences
Ostregarde’s primary defense is the enormous stone wall from which it draws its identity.
Built between two hills to form a natural choke point, the wall once served as a defensive barrier protecting the interior of Asperia from northen threats, mostly coming from the ocean from the Kingdom of Vintergard. A central tower rises from its midpoint, overlooking the surrounding lands.
Though no standing military force is permanently stationed there today, the structure remains functional and defensible if ever needed.
Basic guards maintain the village’s peace, but the wall itself is no longer considered an active military installation.
Industry & Trade
Ostregarde’s economy is driven primarily by trade and transit rather than agriculture.
Situated along one of the overland-accessible routes for islands seeking commerce with the Kingdom of Asperia, the village serves as a modest but important stop for merchants and caravans.
Local businesses cater largely to passing trade, including:
- Inns and lodging for travelers
- Warehousing and temporary storage of goods
- Basic craftsmen and repair services for merchants and caravans
Infrastructure
Most of Ostregarde’s structures are built along the capital-facing side of the great wall, clustered tightly around its base.
The village includes:
- Residential homes
- Merchant lodgings and inns
- Storage buildings and warehouses
- Workshops for craftsmen and laborers
- The mayor’s residence
- Administrative offices
- Logistical storage and communal reserves
History
Ostregarde was originally founded around a major defensive fortification constructed during one of Asperia’s earlier periods of conflict and expansion.
The wall served as a strategic military checkpoint and barrier, guarding a vulnerable approach into the kingdom’s interior lands. Soldiers, engineers, and support workers stationed there gradually formed a permanent settlement around the stronghold.
Over time, the once-military outpost transformed into the quiet village known today, though the wall remains a proud reminder of Ostregarde’s martial past.
Tourism
Ostregarde attracts little in the way of traditional tourism, though travelers occasionally stop to see the great wall and its imposing architecture.
Most visitors are merchants, passing travelers, or historians interested in the kingdom’s past.
