Brotherhood of Mages

The Brotherhood of Mages is the oldest organisation of mages in Essos or the known world. Formed in the fledgling Valyrian Freehold, it united mages from all Valyrian tribes and had control over all of the magic users on the peninsula. It was led by the Conclave, which consisted of two main governing bodies that guided magical practice for centuries, absorbing magic users from conquered and unconquered lands. Expanding their knowledge and power.

Governing Bodies

The most powerful and oldest Mages first founded the Council of Mages to institute codified rules on the use of magic, but the creation of a new hierarchy of order sparked a brief magical civil war, costing the life of many a mage to the detriment of Valyria.   The Council was eventually split into two groups of five mages: the Conclave of the Blood which was led by the Arch Mage and the Council of Fire, with the Conclave having the highest hierarchy and the Council the lower, but the latter still wielded important authority in the Brotherhood. The Council was established to aid the Brotherhood in administering and regulating practitioners of magic. In particular, the Council focused on magical experiments, research, and expanding magical knowledge.

Establishment of the Iñaugrion

Following the first raising of the city of Valyria, Aeryvon Agiar (the first Arch Mage), Aenegel Nohreos and Vhaemor Gaelaeris established the Brotherhood. They called their halls Iñaugrion, and trained potential mages there, including the young Marla Vaellarys, the first female mage and member of the Brotherhood.   After a hundred years, the Conclave of the Blood was installed and the Brotherhood's laws enacted for all mages. Those who didn't conform were few and far between. All Mages realising the potential status and expansion of knowledge that could be attained by this centralisation.   The Brotherhood ensures that every family of status has its own mage. They are selected by the Conclave and placed with the family. The family is not consulted during this process. The criteria for choosing a mage to tie to a family are kept secret by the Brotherhood. In the begining, this process had often caused friction, but a refusal of the mage selected for them saw a rapid decline in their fortunes.

Prohibitions

The Brotherhood regulates and oversees the use of magic, ensuring that practices such as demonology, necromancy, and use of magic against freemen are under their control and scrutiny. Those that break the Brotherhood Laws or practitioners found to be weilding outlawed magics are given fair and just trials; these trials always find the perpetrator guilty and they are put to death immediately. All mages are considered equal before the law, some of them are "more equal than others"; a good example of this is the open secret of what transpires in Golgossos.

Identifying Potentials

Potential Mages or "Potentials", can come from any family or bloodline of Valyrian decent. Magical proclivities or leanings are identified as early as possible. It is considered a great honour for a family to provide a mage and the higher that mage rises the greater the honour to their family. Once identified they are to be taken from their families immediately and brought to within the walls of the Inaugrion. There, they study for years as apprentices, enhancing their skills and honing their powers. Once they have realised their potential, they assigned to a noble family by the Brotherhood as their allocated mage. This allows the apprentice mage to gain political experience and wordly wisdom before returning to the halls and specialising for the good of the Brotherhood and Valyria.

Bonding of the Blood

When a new mage moves from initiate to apprentice, the mage in question, with the aid of a sorcerer performs a ritual that seals the bond of the apprentice to the Brotherhood. This is a similiar ritual to a traditional Valyrian wedding ceremony.   All mages of the Brotherhood are bound in blood. This forms the basis for the family that the new apprentice has within the Brotherhood. The breaking of this bond has very serious consequences.

Types of Mage

Once a mage has returned to the Inaugrion to specialise they may choose one of two distinct paths.

Bloodmage

They understand that life in itself is power and that this power manifests itself through the blood that courses through all living things. A blood mage may or may not respect the power that comes with using their own vitality to cast spells. Blood mage spells mostly deal with the manipulation of blood, their own or others, for the purposes of domination, health, protection, or offence. As part of their connection to the power of life, they are also naturally attuned to the minds and wills of living things such as dragons, animals and people.

Firemage

They have the ability to conjure or control fire. The term can also refer to someone who performs divination using fire. These mages have studied the mystic arts and are usually naturally gifted with fire/heat magics, or learns them, or even just possesses fire/heat-based powers and learns the mystic arts later. These types of mages are considered powerful and rare. A branch of fire mage is known as Pyromancer, these mages work singularly with Valyrian steel and its creation. They guard this secret fiercely and between the pyromancers and their metal workers the secret has remained safe for a thousand years.

Sorcerer

Magic is a part of every sorcerer, suffusing body, mind, and spirit with a latent power that waits to be tapped. Some sorcerers wield magic that springs from an ancient bloodline infused with the magic of dragons. Others carry a raw, uncontrolled magic within them, a chaotic storm that manifests in unexpected ways.   The appearance of sorcerous powers is wildly unpredictable. Some draconic bloodlines produce maybe one sorcerer in every generation, this is why sorcerers are very rare. Most of the time, the talents of sorcery appear as apparent flukes. Some sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their own lives. Sorcerers have no use for the spellbooks and ancient tomes of magic lore that some mages rely on, nor do they rely on a catalyst to grant their spells as blood mages do. By learning to harness and channel their own inborn magic, they can discover new and staggering ways to unleash that power. The rarity and the power of the sorcerer causes them to be pressed into positions of power. Every Arch Mage for over a thousand years has been a sorcerer.

Cost

Magic and its use is never without cost for every major spell cast or incantation there must be a price paid for the use of the magic.   Bloodmages must use blood, either their own which will render them weak or anothers which could have dire consequences.   Firemages must use fire, they themselves are not impervious to fire so burns will be caused. The severity depends on the power of the spell.   Sorcerers are born from magic. It comes from within, so using a powerful spell will tire or even incapacitate said sorcerer of between one and several days. In addition Sorcerers can detect magical use beyond the normal happenings of magic within Valyria. It is said to be like a ripple on a pond when a stone is thrown in for them. The more powerful the spell the greater the ripples and more easily detected and triangulated.

Mages

Mages can be from any walk of Valyrian life, interbred Valyrian also.
