The Fall of Avakiiralon

In midwinter, 3301 AC, the Combined Forces of the Sluagh Dissidents laid siege to Avakiiralon, and five months later saw the fall of a 3300-year Imperial legacy.

When in the spring of 3300, Arcorael Tiveris Khi'Marinae learned of the discontent among the Sluagh, he wrote it off as "the grumblings of the lower castes" and dismissed it with an increased military presence in the Sluagh system. This ultimately is what spelled his defeat and exile, and conclusively, his death. Less than a year later, a force of peasantry, and disillusioned soldiers, including representatives of all lower castes, numbering in the millions, would siege the famed City of Jewels, and less than six months later, sack it and raze the Palace of the Stars to the ground.

Tiveris and his wife would escape with their son and heir, Selnaris, but Selnar's twin sister, Kaelaris, was separated from the family along with the Crown of the Earth and the Crown of the Stars. They, Selnar and Kaelar, have never been reunited, though Selnar insists she is alive, and that he can sense her.

Avakiiralon, which means "Jewel in Avalon" was the epitome of beauty, and it was said that Baldr wept when he first laid eyes upon it. The Palace of the Stars was said to have been the most aesthetically pleasing building ever made. Which made the sacking of the city and the razing of the palace all the more poignant.

The Conflict

Prelude

The situation of the haves and have-nots between the Aristocratic Rua'alfar and Alfar and the rest of everybody else had grown to the point where the upper 1% of the population controlled more than 99% of the wealth. This led to a proletariat uprising starting with the lowest classes (the Sluagh and Fomorians) and working its way through most of the population of the Avalonian Empire in less than a year. By the time of the Siege, 70% of common people of the Empire were rallied against the Aristocracy.

Deployment

In midwinter (though Avakiiralon was unnaturally kept at pleasing temperatures year round), 3301 AC, an army of over a million elves and fomorians, led by the people of Sluagh laid siege to the city and five months later on the night of Oroaias (14th of Flower Moon), sacked the city and forced the Royal Family into exile in Caer-Thun.

Battlefield

The battlefield of the conflict was mostly the city streets of Avakiiralon, and flooding into the Castle itself. Each block of the city was sold dearly with the blood of hundreds of dissidents and the heads of many Royal Guard.

Conditions

The mages of the Guard brought incliment weather upon the whole area in the form of wind and rain, feeling this would negatively affect the aggressors ability to conduct combat as well as their morale.

The Engagement

The engagement began at 02:12 on the early morning of Flower 14, 3301 AC when the dissidents learned that Queen Arianea had gone into labour with the expected twins. They used the distraction as a catalyst to attack the city, and fought for nearly 22 hours, before finally knocking down the main doors of the palace at 00:02, just after midnight, Flower 15. It was said that the queen's cries of childbirth could be heard over the din of battle and that they were moving her bed, with her in it, while the midwife was still delivering the babies.

Outcome

Initially, the lack of central leadership caused the society to break up into anarchosyndiclast enclaves along natural regional boundries, such as rivers and forests. The news that the Imperial Princess had been taken from her family had mixed reactions. There were those who felt she represented a return to Old habits, and that the child should be exposed at the very least. Others felt she was their ticket to a more egalitarian life, and she should be raised to oppose her brother and bring about their way.

Aftermath

Kaelaris was raised by the Elders Council and despite their cautions, was coronated "Queen of Avalon" in 3351 AC. The war continued for 3 years until on the 24th of Storm Moon 3304 AC, the Ruakash supernova occurred sealing Avalon from all other systems, except Sluagh.

Historical Significance

Legacy

Avalon is now an Empire only in the hearts of her supporters. The Avalonian Imperial Navy continues to try to be the voice of peace and justice in Known Space, though often this is Elven (read: Alfar) Peace and Elven Justice. Too often, the AIN imposes draconian measures, to curb "lawlessness" that simply leads to rebellion and freebooting.

In Literature

There are a few works written about this historic event, the ones outside the Avalon System are written by Alfar and Rua'Alfar survivors, and paint the activists in an extremely poor light, the ones in the Avalon System are mostly penned by the activists of the rebellion, and their descendants, and tend to paint the Aristocracy as absolute unyeilding tyrants, though if one looked objectively at the two sides, they would find the activists "closer" to the truth, though in reality, there are no saints here.

Technological Advancement

This coup saw the successful launch of two World Ships for the first time in recorded history.

Location

Belligerents

The Avalonian Royal Guard

Led by

Strength

The ARG is made up of one Regiment of Elite Trained Forces, mostly Swordsingers, mostly Alfar

Casualties

The Royal Guard was obliterated in the Attack on the Palace. 391 Guards made it on the Exodus, and the remainder died holding off the Sluagh.

Objectives

To defend the Royal Family and see that they successfully retreat out of the Palace.
The Combined Sluagh Dissident Forces

Led by

Strength

The Combined Forces of Sluagh Dissidents, did not just include Sluagh. Rather, though Sluagh were the most common beligerant, the forces included Sidhe, Nunnehi, Sylphs, Nymphs, Orcs, Goblins, Gnomes, and Others, whose numbers were collectively too few to be included separately, such as Ents and Giants. All in all, over a million cobeligerants made up this force.

Casualties

Casualties among the Dissidents was fierce, with less than 79% of the total forces surviving the assault in the end. If it weren't for the fact that the forces werre independant of each other, working towards a collective end, the devastation would've been too complete upon the total body to continue, but since certain groups, were affected by higher casualties than others, some groups were only decimated, and could still continue.

Objectives

To see the Royalty and Aristocracy of Avalon abolished. To bring freedom to the underclassed.

Strength

The forces of the AIN numbered in the hundreds of thousands, possibly even millions, throughout known space, In the Avalonian System, there were little more than 260 ships, not including the three World Ships, and their support fleets of about 30 ships each.

Casualties

The Navy initially refused to get involved in what it seen as a Civil matter. However, in the final days when it became apparent that bloodlust was going to overcome any possibility of a diplomatic solution, the Navy moved to protect the Aristocrat's families, and earned the enmity of the dissident forces who burned Navy ships to the grav-plane, and did not take many prisoners. The casualties were immense, losing 198 Ships and one World Ship.

Objectives

To keep the Civil War between Sluagh and Avalon within their respective systems and insure that neither side commits genocide.
