Darkeast

Demographics

The population of Darkeast is made up of about 50% Nisslings, usually (75%) Black, or Green, but occasionally (20%) Copper or Bronze and rarely (5%) other colours of Nissling. 40% of the residents are Allyri, with the same colour demographics, 1% are Dragons with a similar colour range, and all other races make up about 9%.

The City has typical class divides with the upper 10% controlling 90% of the wealth, and the vast majority of those are Black and Green Dragons and Allyri.

Government

Overtly, Darkeast is a Libertarian Paradise. Taxes are reasonable and paid directly to the controlling dragon (Oolong Tesseract-Troi), and laws and regulations are lax. Oolong doesn't like a lot of governance over what he deems as his private affairs, and extends that courtesy to the residents of Darkeast.

On the otherhand, covertly, Oolong has a deathgrip on all "Illegal" activity in Darkeast. No one is robbed, save for his exceptions. There is no murder that Oolong has not sanctioned. There is no violence that he is not aware of and doing something, permenantly, about it. Failure for the rich in Darkeast to pay their taxes will result in that rich person being robbed blind, beaten in an alley and left naked on the side of the river. Only a fool would spit on the deal they have in Darkeast.

If one minds their manners, pays their dues and does nothing to cross The Black Dragon, one has free range of drugs and alchohol, prostitution, gambling, and most importantly, access to The Dungeon.

Defences

In a city of 1.2 million people where 1% are dragons is about 12,000 dragons. If you want to consider 50% are below Juvenile (not that they are not dangerous, they are just generally not seen as combatants) that still leaves 6000 fighting age dragons in the city.

Industry & Trade

Fishing and mining are the two biggest industries on the Talonscar River. The Delta Druids insure that fisheries are sustainable and mining does not disrupt the local ecosystem, by generally killing and making an example of violators. Fisheries for all sorts of fish from succulent kippers to giant carp and catfish are sought by fish enthusiasts throughout the Draconian Empire. Salt mining on the Great Wing Sea is perhaps the biggest industry in Darkeast, as it is the one least likely to piss off the druids, and represents a huge industry for the area. Gold mining on the tributaries is quite popular and prosperous.

Infrastructure

The whole metropolis is built on the banks of the Darkeast River Delta and has a complex series of both underground and above ground residences and a comprehensive sewer system built by the Nisslings. The largest above ground structure is Holmetree, and the largest underground is The Dungeon (except the sewer of course).

Assets

Darkeast is home to a vast variety of income sources. The Talonscar River is home to over 350 varietals of fish, including the delicacies Giant Crawfish and Giant Freshwater Clams. The tourists come to see the only variety of freshwater porpoise on draconia, which makes their home in Languid Lake and travel up and down the river for fun. The waters of the river are said to be Holy, and that bathing in the river is a sacred act. Consequently tens of millions of pilgrims make their way here yearly to bathe in the river and stand on the mighty Troi Bridge and toss coins into the river to bring them properity.

Whether that works for the believer, or not, is a matter for another debate, but it is certainly good for the swarms of young dragons and nisslings who, being mostly black and green, can breathe underwater, and spend days under there collecting all the coins for their hordes. Not that such an endeavor is without peril because Giant Saltwater Crocodiles and Great Wing Dragon Sharks both swim up the delta looking for an easy meal.

Guilds and Factions

The Black Dragon Society controls all crime in Darkeast and there are numerous trade guilds surrounding the industries of the city. The Temple of Tika controls the Dungeon, and has a stranglehold on all divine healing in Darkeast. If you want divine intervention in Darkeast, best talk to The Ladies of Pain.

Tourism

Every year, millions of pilgrims of all races make their way to Darkeast to bathe in the sacred Talonscar River and toss coins for prosperity from Troi Bridge. Tourist souvineers, like clay decanters to carry sacred water and necklaces made from the scales of the almost mythical Mithril Fish are abundatn, especially by the river side.

Architecture

The architecture in Darkeast is a combination of Black Dragon, underground, swampy lairs, and Green Dragon woodwork and contsruction. Imagine Elves and Hobbits living together in a swamp.

Geography

The city of Darkeast is built in the Eastern Fenlands on the Darkeast River Delta at the mouth of the Talonscar river.
