Vile Vala Brew

Vile Vala brew is a strong alcoholic beverage distilled from the roots of the Vala Flowers found in the jungles of south Nyria The VIle Vala brew is the only known cure for the The Webbing since the fungus has an adverse reaction to its host drinking the brew.

Sailor's Return Ceremony

Hunters and Sailors traveling deep into the Dusk Belt have in the past carried back with them apart from great bounty also the spores of the Webbing, a lethal fungus found in the shores of The Frozen Gate and that the wind carries around its shores.   The spores of this mutate fungus are inhaled by the sailors and hunters and remain dormant into their lungs and gut. Once the sailors head back to the much warmer Thebia the spores activate and within a single night bloom by consuming the insides of their carrier in order to create a mushroom stalk tipped with spore sacks ready to bursts, that extends outwards from its victims mouth and up into the air.   To protect themselves, their loved ones and their beloved Naya, the Sailors partake on the "Return" ceremony. During the ceremony the sailors gather around a very large doughnut shaped table with a large fire in the middle, Each sailor is seated with about 2 meters distance from each other. The sailors then start to sing songs about their exploits and those who died and most importantly consume as much of the Vile Vala brew they can stomach.   The Webbing fungus has a natural aversion to the anti-fungal properties of the root and alcohol. When a large amount of the brew is consumed if the sailor is infected the already growing fungus reacts to it. The reaction is extremely violent and can very well kill the host while they fight for their life coughing blood as the fungus crawls its way out of any orifice it can find. During the process those not infected keep singing to the sky the names of those who are fighting to survive and continue drinking not looking at the sailor fighting to expunge the fungus.   If the fungus crawls out the survivor has to grab it and throw it in the fire. If the fungus manages to kill the sailor the other sailors cover the body with brew infused blankets and toss their body into the fire in the middle of the table. If all of the crew is infected and it looks like nobody will survive the last standing sailor tips a key of gunpowder into the fire to kill and scorch everyone on the table and to notify the nearby town.   Full crew exposure is quite rare and has only been seen twice the last one hundred years but infections are rather common. Four out of five Nayans survive the violent reaction but Nayans are strong and robust people used to adversity and pain. Most other denizens of Thebia almost certainly perish during the process.   The ceremony takes place far outside any city to make sure that the rest of the Nayans are safe. The survivors spend the next day getting off the vile taste in their mouth and the hangover and only then they board their ship again and head into the city

What a lovely fungus XD I really love this ceremony, it sounds super bloody and probably traumatising to watch! Those sailors must be very brave (and crazy) to want to go back after being contaminated once and going through all of that already :D   My only comment is that I think you should mention earlier that the ceremony takes place on the shore instead of on the boat since I was wondering how they managed to deal with all that fire :p

This is horrifying. I love it.   That's one hell of a tricksy fungus. Does it take over hosts in the Frozen Gate at all, or does it require warmer climates?

Oh this is so deliciously horrifying! Well done, my friend! Well done! I want to know more about this wonderful fungus, The Webbing!   Also, has any enterprising ship's surgeon come up with an drink or tonic to help with the recovery?   Do the more seasoned Nayans who have gone through this and survived, marked the occasion? Say with tattoos in a way to celebrate they are still alive and kicking?

Oof, that fungus sounds awful! I wouldn't go near it. Especially since the only cure still might cause you to die! D:

You paint such a vivid picture of the whole process, particularly the putting the body into the fire part. And I could totally see with my mind's eye the moment when the last standing soldier tips the gunpowder into the fire.   Great work!

Now it's time for the awkward wave.

Wow, you've made the ritual so vivid. I could really see it in my mind's eye whilst reading. It's so nice that the sailors protect their families in this way.
