Lavatory Cleaner Profession in Dark-Fall | World Anvil

Lavatory Cleaner

Required unsanitary work

The field of lavatory cleaning is highly necessary but is sadly looked down upon in most regions. It's seen as "dirty work" and many regard the people with this profession as being of lesser mental capacity. Their reasoning is that if they were smarter, they'd obviously have another job. However, if all lavatory cleaners disappeared overnight, the entirety of Dysvoll would have a major problem.
Huh? Oh, you mean him. Right, that would be Milleon. He's the city's lavatory cleaner.   Haven't spoken to him for years. We used to be quite good friends back in our school days, but you just don't socialize with lavatory cleaners, you see.

Undervalued but important

The position as lavatory cleaner has existed for as long as lavatories have been a thing. It's a staple of the work market and without it, finer people would have to roll up their sleeves and get into the unsanitary work themselves. One may think that they should get respect for doing a job no one else wants to do, but it's quite the other way around.

Avoided and bullied

In some communities, it's common to freeze out the lavatory cleaners lightly, by calling them unkind and rude nicknames and some even avoid them. It doesn't help them that their work hours, which are mostly during the evening or night, essentially make them incapable of taking part in many important bonding traditions.   In some societies, it's so dire that the lavatory cleaners are frozen completely out and removed from the community. In these cases, they truly are outcasts.

One Exception

There has been one clear exception to this social ostracizing, and that was in the shining city of Neklian, before the city fell into ruins. Here, it was common to see everyone as being of the same worth, no matter what work they did.   Here, the lavatory cleaners were a celebrated profession and people greatly appreciated the service they provided them with.

The final letter of Isadore

This can even be seen in the final letter sent by the last Refined Servant of Neklian before his disappearance. In The Last Letter of Isadore, Isadore Ravenswood politely requests the lavatory cleaner to help him out. The letter is also written by him, and not even an assistant. This shows that Isadore didn't even think it to be below him to spend time to write directly to a person of this profession.

I once thought of becoming a lavatory cleaner. The money is good!   However, I didn't want to be viewed like that. I didn't want to be seen as dirty or dumb or a bum.

The last letter written by Isadore Ravenswood before his and his court's disappearance from Neklian.

I have noticed other leaders have an expression of shock or disbelief when they see me interact directly with our lavatory cleaners.   I find that to be rather odd. They're nice good people, who help us with a problem we don't like to fix ourselves. So of course they deserve our respect, just like everyone else.

The poor poop-cleaners of the world, always so underappreciated, despite keeping us safe from an ever-rising tide of turds.   Darkfall looks so stunning with all your custom work, and all the writing is so neat and good :D

Good on Isadore for seeing past the status. I hope one day people recognize their worth. Great article :)
