Welcome to the land of Eryphir (air-eh-fear) - a world imagined by Matt “KC Rift” Everhart, but fleshed out by you, the players. Imagine a world where technology developed through the use of magic rather than science - where firearms and early vehicles were powered by elemental arcane power rather than gunpowder and fossil fuels. Picture 19th Century England as it would have been if magic, not physics, had shaped the industrial revolution. Aetherism is the study of the aether - a mystical force that permeates all things across the multiverse from the ethereal plane - it is a study of its motion and behavior through space and time, as well as studies of aether as they relate to the entities of energy and force. In short, it is the scientific study of magic. Those who follow and practice aetherism are simply called aetherists - but the name belies a very diverse and wide variety of skills and occupations, all of whom make the world of Eryphir truly unique. If you can imagine, picture elemental-powered trains, or the sending information across vast distances through the use of conduits through the Ethereal plane, or gliding across the countryside on your personal, hovering vehicle. Imagine villains attempting world domination through pacts with the Old Gods, or armies bearing magical artillery - picture these and so much more, and you can imagine the world of Eryphir. Aetherism in Eryphir is used to create amazing inventions - improving the lives of those around the world in unbelievable ways - but it also holds a darker side, one which many would take advantage of and use against the people and against the Crown. As Agents (or Ravens) of a group called The Blackwood Society, you are responsible for protecting the Commonwealth of Ustren from these oft times abominable amalgamations of magic and technology. Together, with other Blackwood Agents from across the realm, you form the bastion against the ever-present darkness threatening the world.
