High Admiral

History

To lead a disparate archipelago of former kingdoms under one flag and one fleet takes a strategic mind and far-reaching wisdom. With few exceptions throughout their history, the position of High Admiral has been just that. When Orso Nacatore led the island of Sandressi to unite the The Litoric Islands in the Unification War, he set the precedent for what every future High Admiral needed to embody. Sitting at the head of the Admiralty Board the leader of the Litoric Islands is embroiled in constant strategic planning for both the predictable future and all hypotheticals. While delegation is key to managing this intense workload, the character of his or her Board must reflect that of the nation, so wise promotions are a must. Beyond this, diplomatic tact, sometimes rare in a nation of sailors, is needed to manage both the internal politics of the Princes at Port and their separate island kingdoms, as well as the always precarious relations with the northern tribes and Anhara to the south.

Cultural Significance

"For ten years we struggled alone and apart, dozens of islands being picked off one by one until Orso pieced us together... You risk years of work! You risk thousands of lives! The blood of a people willing to sacrifice anything on a belief in our guidance will lie at the bottom of the sea if you continue on this path!" - Prince Luca Doria to High Admiral Vivaldi before the Frozen Wars
The Litoric Islands get by on teamwork, efficiency, and trust. In a nation where many of the best, brightest, and healthiest are away at sea for months at a time, the community looks to their leaders to both keep them from worry and keep them on task. Mothers, wives, and children who know not whether the sailors of the Litoric Fleet will ever return home need their faith to be constantly renewed through strong leadership at both the local level of the Princes at Port and the national level of the Admiralty. As the fleet represents the wooden wall that saved the Litoric Islands from the dark beginnings of their history, so to does the High Admiral represent something steady and continuous in a nation who's fortunes are as turbulent as the sea.

Qualifications

The High Admiral requires, by virtue of his position, vast experience in the many realms of naval warfare as well as civilian government is necessary. In accordance with the meritorious virtues of The Litoric Islands , the High Admiral faces a steep climb to his position. That said, many of the office holders throughout the position's history have come from the Plankholding Families of the Isles. To prevent this, a mix of election and appointment takes place. All high ranking officers from Captain upwards, as well as the Princes at Port are given an equal vote they may cast for a member of a list of current officers or members of the navy who have earned exceptional meritorious awards.

Removal/Dismissal

"Argono? As in... Argono Vivaldi? His career has been kissing up and down the ladder, we're doomed." - Admiral Iane de Auria before the election of High Admiral Vivaldi.
While death or retirement is the general course of exit for most leaders, in extreme situations High Admirals have risked "mandatory retirement" in occurrences where the Princes at Port, Admirals' Mast and the Admiralty Board united against the High Admiral in situations of crisis. However, this is largely conjecture in high-brow parts of society, as the leaders of the Litoric Islands have survived unpopularity in times of crisis thus far, even after disastrous defeats in the Frozen Wars
