Expositor Rank/Title in Wyrion | World Anvil

Expositor

Formation

The Expositor is a product of the the First Climbing War, when upstart noble houses wrenched political power from the more ancient ones, who while great in years, lacked material wealth. This shift in the balance of Anharan politics required minor, vassal, noble houses to be accomplished, and as a reward the position of Expositor was created, to give voice to the minor nobility's needs on the Rostrum.

Duties

The Expositor's primary duty is giving Listenings to the lower classes and lesser nobility. This is an Anharan tradition and civic event whereby a public speaker gives a talk with the purpose of informing or convincing the general public on a particular point, generally from the Rostra and by the Expositor or a Rhetor. Beyond this informative task, the Expositor also receives one vote on the Rostrum, the legislative body of the nation. In meetings of the Rostrum, they are given preference by the Rhetorlord in speaking times, as they are expected to make vocal the needs and desires of the general populace, despite being just one vote.   To the lower classes, the Expositor represents them and their voice on the Rostrum, making the position a crucial tool for maintaining the social hierarchy of Anhara. Despite the fact that the Expositor is generally a noble, albeit of a lesser house, it is still perceived as the peoples' representative and expected to stand up to the Rhetorlord on behalf of the masses of the nation.

Selection

The Expositor is expected to name their successor ahead of time, rather than being selected by the Rhetorlord or a specific noble house. Traditionally, the holder of the position is supposed to be an important member of the lower classes. However, in practice, minor noble houses tend to rotate the title between a representative of each, with every vassal house getting a turn. On occasion, the outcry from the non-noble classes is strongly in favor of one particular citizen that the Expositor is forced to name him or her as their successor, this typically being some sort of heroic warrior or intellectual who has worked their way up from the lower classes.
